Jeff Parker
The New Breed

Jeff Parker’s a big name to those with an interest in experimental jazz, with a place in Chicago’s Tortoise group and having released 5 albums himself. Making sample based music, Parker infuses a myriad of genres; jazz, R&B and electronica to name a few, to create a distinctive sound which edges into hip hop, with Parker citing the likes of J Dilla as an inspiration, whilst keeping a funky jazz sound here on The New Breed.

Anthony Joseph
Caribbean Roots

British and Trinidadian singer, novelist and spoken-word artist Anthony Joseph is finally coming out and saying it: he’s got Caribbean Roots. As you might guess based on the title, this record is all about Caribbean rhythms and melodies - but never without freely formed lyrics and some crazy and equally free jazz.

Bernard Purdie
Lialeh

1974’s Lialeh is regarded as “the first major black porn movie”, and who are we to disagree? With a film like that to accompany, it should be no surprise that the original soundtrack, by Bernard Purdie, is some of the sexiest, funkiest material you ever heard. I mean, these are literally porn grooves. Extremely rare, but now reissued by Light In The Attic.

The Bongolian
Moog Maximus

How about a ride in a bongo-funk inspired time machine? Ever since Nasser Bouzida, known for his role in Big Boss Man, locked himself up with a bunch of synthesizers, his project The Bongolian has resulted in severely synthesized funky bongo tracks. And Moog Maximus continues dropping those b-boy-friendly funkbombs.

Miles Davis & Robert Glasper
Everything's Beautiful

Bold stuff here: Robert Glasper reworks slices of sound from the mighty back catalogue of Miles Davis into R&B-inclined new pieces. Everything’s Beautiful also includes soulful vocals from heavy-hitters like Erykah Badu and Stevie Wonder(!), all paying their respects to Miles while creating something wholly new.

Peace
Black Power

Black Power by Peace was released in the mid 1970’s, and it has taken as long as this for it to see an official reissue. And yet this is one of the premium albums of the whole Zambian Zamrock scene, a groovy and soulful thing. It is also the only album that Peace ever made. In print once more, with a booklet, courtesy of Now-Again.

Prince
Prince

The vinyl reissue of Prince’s 1979 eponymous second album was planned before His Royal Badness sadly passed away. This gives fans and newcomers alike a chance to hear the Minneapolis musical polymath in his early days . The album contains I wanna Be Your Lover, his first big hit. Pressed on 140g vinyl.

Dam Funk
DJ-Kicks

Dam Funk steps up to the wheels of steel for his contribution to the venerable DJ-Kicks series. You’d expect the man to deliver some compelling funk action, and boy does he not disappoint. Stacks of quality synthy-groove, sourced from producers big and small, and topped off with an exclusive Dam Funk cut. Different tracklistings on the CD and vinyl editions.

Prince
1999

The best way to celebrate the memory of the suddenly-departed Prince surely isn’t to read through hundreds of obituaries and thinkpieces. Do it right, and listen to some of the good man’s music. 1999 is his 1982 fifth album, and its synth-funky joys come sprawled across 2 LPs. Reissued by Warner Bros.

Seratones
Get Gone

Seratones hail from Louisiana, but have wide-ranging ambitions. On Get Gone, which is their debut full-length album, they pull in the finest influences from the surrounding regions, leading to songs that are soulful, jazzy and bluesy all at the same time, not to mention the garage-heat of their riffs. Nice. Out on Fat Possum.

Walker Family Singers
Panola County Spirit

The Daptone label release the first proper recordings from the Walker Family Singers. Panola Country Spirit, on CD and very limited vinyl LP, is a powerful collection of bluegrass and gospel. The songs draw from blues and americana too, using simple arrangements and strained guitar riffs to create impassioned, spiritual music.

Blind Alfred Reed
Appalachian Visionary

Dust to Digital continue their incredible work reissuing lost folk, gospel and blues albums with Blind Alfred Reed’s Appalachian Visionary. These recordings from 1927 and 1929 are extremely rare and showcase Reed’s covers of hymns as well as his own old-time compositions for violin. These rich and joyous songs are full of witty lyrics about depression-era life and emotive instrumentation.

Men of North Country
This City

Men of North Country are a modern-day Israeli band, although they could probably fool you that they were from NYC in its vintage soul era. They certainly groove, swagger and swing in all the right ways, and they have the fiery energy of all the best soul. This City (referring to their native Tel Aviv) is their second album. Out on Acid Jazz.

Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band
55

Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band are a steel drum band operating out of Hamburg, Germany. They got the attention of DJs and home listeners alike when they covered 50 Cent’s essential track ‘P.I.M.P.’ (included here), and have an array of other crucial covers to show off on 55, their debut full-length. CD / 2LP on Big Crown.

Mayer Hawthorne
Man About Town

Mayor Hawthorne has built a reputation making ridiculously earnest, fun and groovy 80s-inspired funk and On Man About Town he has refined his sound into a slick, synthetic pop. This is Hawthorne’s fourth album and he not only plays most of the instruments, but handles production duties as well.

Arena
Arena

This album, the only record made by the selection of Australia-based session musicians who went under the name Arena, is so revered by collectors of jazz-funk and rare grooves that it is very hard to find any of the scarce original pressings. But this material is too strong, too interesting, too special for that to remain the case: hence this Record Store Day reissue!

Boulevards
Groove!

Despite its diverse instrumentation and big band atmosphere Boulevards is dominated by the presence of one man, Jamil Rashad. His deep and emotive vocals power the electronic soul of Groove! Whether the background is early hip-hop productions, or 1980s party jams, he can be relied on for smooth and funky vocals.

Ornette Coleman
To Whom Who Keeps A Record

This is a rare slice of Ornette Coleman, a collection originally only released in Japan and made up of outtakes from the classics Change of the Century and This Is Our Music. Needless to say with that pedigree (and with the same astonishing band line-up, including Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell), this is premium jazz. First-time vinyl reissue!

The Filthy Six
More Filth

The Filthy Six play old-school dancefloor soul and R&B with all the elements in place: rock-solid rhythm section, smooth organ lines, tight brass and guitar… Every part works in service to the get-on-up groove, which most listeners will find irresistible. More Filth is released on the Acid Jazz label, in CD and LP editions.

Rusconi + Fred Frith
Live in Europe

Rusconi are a young and adventurous jazz band; who could be a better collaborative partner than old and adventurous jazz man Fred Frith? The former Henry Cow man slots his jagged guitar right into the Rusconi sound. Live In Europe presents extracts from 2 live shows on 180g vinyl. Released on Qilin Records.

GoGo Penguin
Fanfares

Gondwana Records press GoGOpenguin’s nu-jazz debut Fanfares. The Manchester unit combines jazz composition and percussion with elements borrowed from electronica and ambient music. Delicate neoclassical piano is framed by strange arrangements and super tight drumming. At a stretch we could compare them to Portico Quartet, but GoGoPenguin are making something unique.

GoGo Penguin
Man Made Object

GoGo Penguin are part of a small, elite pantheon of British artists signed to the legendary Blue Note label, putting them in the same room as jazz royalty. As Man Made Object shows, they’ve got there by melding traditional jazz approaches with sounds from glitchy electronica: all produced acoustically, of course.

Luther Dickinson
Blues & Ballads (A Folksinger’s Songbook) Volumes I & II

Folk, blues, and southern rock troubadour Luther Dickinson, release Blues & Ballads (A Folksinger’s Songbook) Volumes I & II. This collection on New West highlights the mid-south, Memphis rock ‘n roll sound that Dickinson works to preserve. To celebrate oral and written traditions in music Dickinson has also included a 16-page songbook with both the digipak CD and 180 gram vinyl double LP.

Marva Whitney
It's My Thing

Proper, original A-grade funk from Marva Whitney. It’s My Thing was produced by none other than James Brown, and has been hard to find since its 1969 release. Probably because hip-hop producers have been grabbing irresistible breaks from it for years. Now though, this reissue makes the whole album available, with 4 rare bonus tracks too. Double LP on Soul Brother

Tord Gustavsen, Simin Tander, Jarle Vespestad
What Was Said

Tord Gustavsen, Simin Tander and Jarle Vespestad explore Norwegian hymns on this ECM release; it’s jazz, but not as we know it. As a duo Gustavsen and Vespestad have worked closely together for a long time, refining their complex interplay for piano, drums and subtle electronics. But here they also complicate their relationship by working with Afghan poet Tander. Together they make What Was Said a very personal and moving piece of modern jazz.

Avishai Cohen
Into The Silence

Following on from his stunning contribution to Mark Turner’s 2014 Lathe Of Heaven, Israeli trumpeter Avishai Cohen makes his leader debut on ECM with Into The Silence. The album features pianist Yonathan Avishai, drummer Nasheet Waits and bassist Eric Revis - known for his work with the Branford Marsalis Quartet along with Sax from Bill McHenry. The understanding between Cohen and Waits occasionally recalls the relationship between Miles Davis and Tony Williams or Don Cherry and Billy Higgins. The album is dedicated to his late father, David.

The James Hunter Six
Hold On!

James Hunter (and his Six) is back with his 4th record, this time on the same famed Daptone label that have been keeping the flame of this kind of funky soul music burning brightly for years. Hold On! has everything perfectly in place, from Hunter’s full-throated frontman vocals to the horn section sparring over the groovy rhythms. Full of soul.

Fold
Fold

Fold are a quartet from Leeds who mix hip-hop, funk, jazz and a teeny bit of psychedelic rock to produce a slick and confident sound. They have played gigs with and remixed the music of Public Service Broadcasting. Their self-titled debut, over its ten tracks, contemplates the importance of the life lessons not taught in school. Self-released on 180g vinyl and digipak CD.

Krokofant
Krokofant II

Krokofant are as gnarled and hard as you’d expect the implied combination of a crocodile and an elephant to be. They take a guitar / drums / saxophone trio format and drive it into improvised territory, although it must be said that they settle very comfortably into hard rock forms 9 times out of 10. Second album Krokofant II is out on Rune Grammofon.

Michael Valentine West
Code 17 Abstraction

Code 17 Abstraction is an album of electronic wonder from Michael Valentine West (who you might know better as Mikimo Sosumi, Twiggy And The K-meson or Lower Third). Mad, funky, energetic styles tumble over each other, (we’re talking glitch, funk, maybe even a touch of drum & bass) forming a wild whole. LP release on Anna Ott.

The Edge Of Daybreak
Eyes Of Love

Eyes Of Love is a rare proposition: it was recorded by four incarcerated artists, imprisoned in Virginia, USA in the 70’s. But this is not prison blues: instead, The Edge Of Daybreak sounds like it could have poured forth from un-impinged freedom, such is the bright beauty that is played here. Reissue on Numero Group.

James Cotton
Mighty Long Time

Fay Hallam
Corona

A trip to Italy inspired the songs on Fay Hallam’s new album, Corona. Upon her return, she was bursting with ideas and wrote all of the songs in just two days. A melting pot of influences helped create this eclectic album from Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astrud Gilberto to Beck via The Carpenters and Frankie Laine. There’s even a cover of Paul McCartney’s classic Maybe I’m Amazed.

Dexter Story
Wondem

Dexter Story deploys influences from all across a range of East African nations, to enormously good-time effect. Wondem features guests like Nia Andrews, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Yared Tashele, but it is Dexter’s broad vision and detailed arrangements that bring this record home. On Soundway.

The Necks
Vertigo

Vertigo is album number 18 for Australian jazz trio, The Necks. They like to take a simple idea and allow it to develop organically through improvisation. They don’t know where they’re going when they set off but they always seem to get there. Their music is very human, it allows room for space, it’s ambiguous allowing the listener to interpret it in their own way.

Daptone Gold Vol.II

Daptone Gold Vol. II is one of those highly reliable compilations: excellent soul from the Daptone vaults. Lots of material that is hard to find, having been either previously unreleased or previously unreissued from old 45's. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley, The Como Mamas… great stuff all through.

Dam Funk
Invite The Light

Eighties electro-funk revivalist Dam Funk has an excellent line in smooth jams both slow and fast, and he crucially understands the essential swing of funk. Invite The Light gets help from the likes of Q-Tip and both Leon Sylvers III and Leon Sylvers IV. The home of this record is Stone’s Throw, just the right place I should think.

Willis Earl Beal
Noctunes

Willis Earl Beal has been out of view for over two years: turns out he was busy prepping Noctunes, his sweeping new LP. The feel of this music occurs to me as space-soul: not space in George Clintonesque way, but in the sense that it feels like Beal’s intense vocals feel like they are floating in a void of subtle synths and heartache. On Tender Loving Empire.

Tarracoir
Growth

‘Growth’ contains the edited, collaged and overdubbed first two live performances of Dublin grindcore, hardcore three piece Tarracóir (Gaelic for Tractor), featuring Diarmad Mac Diarmada (Tenor Sax, Trombone, Percussion, Garden Hose, Vox), Bryan O'Connell (Drums) and Gavin Prior (Guitar, Vox, Bass, Piano Innards, Electronics). With elements of free jazz and death metal accompanied by chaotic additions of demon-chasing rituals, their music has a primitive brutality that is deliberately ignorant.

The Music City Sessions Volumes 1-3

The Music City Sessions is a three volume collection of rare, early ’70s Bay Area funk, soul, and R&B. Volume one, ‘Richmond Experience’, features 10-tracks of previously unreleased material based around the working-class, blue-collar landscape that created the street funk of Richmond and the East Bay Area.

The Sorcerers
The Sorcerers

The Sorcerers are made up from legends of the Leeds jazz and world music scene. Their eponymous debut takes in influences from Ethiopian Jazz, European horror film scores from the ‘60s and ‘70s and British library music. Ethiopian jazz legend, Mulatu Astatke, Quinton Scott of Strut records and Late Junction presenter Nick Luscombe have championed the band. The album was recorded in ATA records own analogue studio to give the music some analogue authenticity. Opening track Pinch Of The Death Nerve was made “Beat Of The Week” by BBC 6 Music’s Huey Morgan.

Steven A Clark
The Lonely Roller

Steven A. Clark has a neo-soul, electro-R&B kind of sound, his emotive crooning sitting atop a bed of expansive synth-lines and neat, funky bassline. The Lonely Roller has Clark’s charismatic, emotive vocals and the swinging productions to back him up: I’m sure he’ll do well. On Secretly Canadian.

Whoah, who knew that Duke Ellington & His Orchestra did a recording session with legendary krautrock / komische producer Conny Plank (Can, Neu!, Ash Ra Tempel etc.)? Alex Puddu
The Mover ft. Joe Bataan / Soultiger

Alex Puddu is a smooth character (his last release was literally a soundtrack to some vintage Danish porn), and here he gives us a preview of his upcoming album with a 7”. Two tracks of slick grooving neo-soul, with vocals on The Mover provided by semi-famed Latin singer Joe Bataan. Out on the Schema label.

Exhaustion w/ Kris Wanders
Exhaustion w/ Kris Wanders

Scrappy no wave punx Exhaustion are friends with a saxophonist, named Kris Wanders, and here lies the inevitable conclusion of their acquaintanceship: a self-titled LP of music that goes slower and more patient. These are carefully considered improvisations, in a way, bringing together different styles and making space they can both exist in.

Detail
First Detail

The first detail you must realize is this: all the musicians on this record are Norwegian free jazz musicians, and this is a free jazz album. It features organs and saxophones and wild music in general. These guys don’t just have a good eye for detail. They are Detail, and this is First Detail.

Albatrosh
Night Owl

We could just say Rune Grammofon and let your imagination run wild from there, but that'd be misleading: Albatrosh actually make jazz, and while 'Night Owl' is their second record on the experimental Norwegian label, it's their fifth on a long, steady career built on tenacious compositional structures and a melodic approach to playing.

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis
Kitty, Daisy & Lewis The Third

Winsome middle class siblings Kitty, Daisy and Lewis reappear for a third album of laid back old timey organic grooves. If lead single "Baby Bye Bye" sounded just a little too close to Mike Read's "UKIP Calypso" then the lyrics chart a more lovelorn territory that should help get it onto an advert before the summers out. Produced by Mick Jones of The Clash.

Richie Hayes Vs Noonday Underground
Here Comes The Fury

Back together on vinyl 12” are old collaborators Richie Hayes and Noonday Underground. the first release from Art Gallery / Monkey See Monkey Do and it’s a strong one, featuring the vocals of ex-Morcheeba vocalist Daisy Marty, Simon Dine and multi-instrumental brilliance from Richie Hayes.

Full Blast & Friends
Sketches and Ballads

This group comes together on the orders of one Michael Wertmueller, the part-composer, part-drummer who makes Full Blasts what it is. The & Friends part is thanks to the contributions of saxophonist Peter Brötzmann and e-bassist Marino Pliakas as well as clarinet player Ken Vandermark and additional percussionist Dirk Rothbrust. 'Sketches And Ballads' is equal parts loose and disciplined, moving between more prepared arrangements to lightning-fast blastbeats and moments of free-form.

Gloria Ann Taylor
Deep Inside You

Apparently one of those records which goes for silly money online, a reissue is now available to your wallet’s relief of this classic soul number Deep Inside You by Gloria Ann Taylor. Flying Lotus
Until The Quiet Comes

2012’s ‘Until The Quiet Comes’, the fourth studio LP from Flying Lotus, represents a hugely important step in the producer-composer’s career. While previous FlyLo releases had touched on jazz - both earthly and spiritual - these influences had largely been incorporated to serve the producer’s ultra-whacked brand of hip-hop and neo-IDM. However, on ‘Until The Quiet Comes’ we find the one born Steven Ellison creating notably lusher work that draws heavily on the sounds of Alice Coltrane and Sun Ra. Synths and beats still play a part, but the way that Ellison prioritises harmony and reverie here paved the way not only for subsequent FlyLo triumphs like ‘You’re Dead!’ but also the great records we’d get from The Comet Is Coming and Floating Points later in the decade. Thundercat, Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke contribute.

Jaga Jazzist
Jaga Jazzist - '94-'14

Post-rock wasn't always this drab; there was a time when it could sound like it was made by a jazz band living in a beanstalk. Jaga Jazzist's inventive and ever-curious sound infused nu-jazz with the climactic disciplines of Talk Talk and Tortoise. They're pretty old now, though, and this year marks their twentieth anniversary, so they've reissued their most bombastic and jazz-dominated work, A Livingroom Hush.

DJ Fede
Rude Boy Funker

DJ Fede is a vintage producer from Italy, making his name in the early 1990s after working tirelessly to become prolific as can-be with a bunch of hip-hop records and a great deal of appearances on funk and jazz compilations. 'Rude Boy Funker' collects together many of his most popular tracks, and genre-hops like crazy, featuring a roster of contributions from Bunna, Cato, and Mr T-Bone -- from reggae to ska to funk to wherever the hell Fede wants to go.

Guano Padano
Americana

Guano Padano's Italian jazz 'n' swing heroics are on display once again with 'Americana', named after the book of translated American works literary mind Ello Vittorini hoped to bring to Italy in the 1940s. Padano let their fascination with Vittorini's undertaking, as well as with American writers, bleed through the songs of 'Americana', marrying their distinctly Italian sound with American grandstanding.

Psych-Funk 103: Sa-Re-Ga! Psychedelic Funk India

A platter of hallucinatory spices from various Indian artists. As a follow up to their other guitar-centric odyssey's, Psych-Funk 103: Sa-Re-Ga! Psychedelic Funk India spans through the 70's until '83. It's full of tripped out guitars, super tight drums and raw vocals and horns. Out on CD from World Psychedelic Funk Classics.

Sonore
Cafe OTO

This is a recording of Peter Brotzmann, Ken Vandermark and Mats Gustafsson all blowing horns at Cafe Oto in April 2011 culminating in a particularly windy night across north-east London. Originally broadcast on Jazz on 3. I wonder if anyone in the audience was shushed as happened to me the last two times I attended Cafe Oto?

Nels Cline & Julian Lage
Room

Nels Cline is a guitarist best known for his tenure in alt-country superheroes Wilco, while Julian Large made his name playing with Mark O'Connor and Gary Burton. This record, simply titled 'Room', displays a tactful understanding of what people want to hear from these two brilliant and delicate guitarists: a simple record that concentrates on the details of their playing. 'Room' puts one guitarist in each channel and lets their sound trickle down like a slow-moving stream.

Sly Stone
I'm Just Like You: Sly's Stone Flower Power 1969-70

He's just like us, except for he actually has hair, and can play instruments well. 'I'm Just Like You: Sly Stone's Flower Power' celebrates the second era of the master's career, after leaving the Family Stone for a solo career that explored the electronic expansions of funk music, using a wide variety of instruments and programmed drum machines to create grooves like no other. This double LP chronicles an innovative period that Stone probably won't be remembered for, but probably should be honoured for.

Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens
Sinner / Everybody Knows (River Song)

The gravelly voiced Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens belt out a couple of classics on this  7” vinyl from Daptone. Amazingly not named from the enigmatic wife of the Doctor from the BBC’s Doctor Who, but in fact a celestial rendition of the Texan tune transposed through rhumba to the Caribbean. Gospel combined with the island sound makes for an excellent record.

This compilation attempts to elucidate the versatility and transience of jazz music through the '60s and '70s in America, when the civil rights movement was in full swing and the sounds around it were constantly changing. With 'Black Fire! New Spirits! Deep and Radical Jazz in the USA 1957-75', Soul Jazz Records highlights music from acts such as Archie Shepp, Yusef Lateef and Don Cherry, to give you an example of how varied the banner of jazz was, even in this era.

The Soul Of Designer Records

This monolithic boxset attempts to give its listener an idea of the scope of Designer Records' scope. The duo behind the operation, soul men Style Wooten and Roland Jones, recorded up to five hundred singles, many of them now revered as classics in traditional gospel. This set of one hundred (plus one more for luck!) songs shows how distinctive and fluid their style was, and now it can be heard in every recording artist they worked with.

Sun Ra Arkestra
3rd September 1988 Chicago

This is one of those does-what-it-says-on-the-tin deals, but anyway: Sun Ra performs live! In 1988! Let's zone in on this a bit, though: this appearance documents Sun Ra at the Chicago Free Jazz Festival, backed by his classic Solar Arkestra and performing some of his most impressionist and avant-garde works.

Big Boss Man
Last Man On Earth

Big Boss Man aren't a one-genre band: they make boogaloo music, formally, but will often delve into jazz, psychedelic, Latin rythms and whatever else they feel like. 'Last Man On Earth' is their fourth record, and their first in four years, too: it collects fifteen tracks varying in their particular dance aesthetic of choice, including the smooth jazz single "Aardvark". Expect this quartet to play it loud, whatever it is they choose to play.   Tracks: Theme From Last Man On Earth Aardvark Blow Your Own Last Man On Earth (Feat. Sinkane
Mean Love

With roots in the rich musical history of North America as well as Africa, Sinkane provide a new perspective on what Soul Music is, and what it can be. Sinkane’s Mean Love rolls like an emotional, existential history of the artist. Ahmed Gallab has created an altogether unique compound of sound, stylistically nostalgic and ultramodern at the same time. From Gallab’s childhood in Sudan there is a Pan-African influence of popular Sudanese music and haqibah, as well as distinct horn and synth arrangements more common to East Africa.

Alien Ensemble
Alien Ensemble

Attempting to contact other intelligent life forms with the Alien Ensemble. Their self-titled record is the bands own take on improvised music. Taking ideas and concepts from the history of jazz, their sound blends Gil Evans-ish arranging techniques, Sun Ra harmonic forays and contemporary textures a la Brian Blade et al. This all acoustic group also stray into less abstract sounds of european folk and popular music territory. Out on vinyl LP and CD from Alien Transistor.
