Lee Fields & The Expressions
It Rains Love

Lee Fields and The Expressions latest album, It Rains Love, comes on the 50th anniversary year of Lee Fields career. The soul man has worked with all sorts of people over the years from Bobby Womack to BB King and Kool & The Gang. He has been recording albums with The Expressions since 1979 with this being his 7th. Productivity picked up in recent years following the popularity of Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones. LP and CD, with limited editions of each available while stocks last, on Big Crown.

Fixity
No Man Can Tell

Sophomore LP from Dan Walsh’s Fixity project here. As it was on previous Fixity offerings like The Things In The Room, No Man Can Tell finds Walsh teaming up with a number of session jazzers for a set of highly original jazz-adjacent improvisations. Doom-jazz, free music, stoner metal and the large-ensemble spiritual experiments of artists like Horace Tapscott are all at work here. It makes No Man Can Tell an unusual and intriguing listen.

Fixity
The Things In The Room

Dan Walsh was busy in 2016. One of the four records released by the Irish musician under his Fixity name was The Things In The Room, an LP tracked in Sweden with three other musicians. These improvisations are highly potent doom/free-jazz numbers that touch on everything from Melt Yourself Down to Free Nelson Mandoomjazz. Released through Penske Recordings.

Cykada
Cykada

Even more London jazz! Cykada are a six piece considered with taking you to the stratosphere. Held together by an unbelievably tight rhythms section, on their debut Cykada send you off to space in rudimentary space ship made of a saxophone and a trumpet. Intense in a way very few bands dare to be. On Astigmatic.

Jack Jacobs
I Believe It’s Alright

Beautiful cut of classic Philly soul here. Jack Jacob’s ‘I Believe It’s Alright’ is a killer track with a scorching guitar solo breaking through early on, and Jacob’s own astounding voice atop this music of constant drive. Criminally lost through the passage of time, with hope this re-release can right that wrong.

Talk Talk
Laughing Stock

The final album from a band who evolved from synth-pop into intricate, unbelievably delicate avant-jazz compostion. This reissue comes 26 years after the original release but the music hasn't aged a bit. 'Ascension Day' churns and whirrs whilst 'New Grass' tugs the heart strings just as strongly as before. Absolutely essential.

Aaron Broomfield
Boomerang

Double-mix delight from Crown Ruler Records here. Back in the late ‘70s Aaron Broomfield of the Broomfield Corporate Jam briefly attempted a solo career. It didn’t run to more than a handful of singles, but for some reason his killer space-funk jam ‘Boomerang’ never made it to the pressing plant. Here 'Boomerang' comes presented in two versions - the flexi-disco A-side and the loose, sensual demo take. Anyone fond of a bit of Melodies International should take a gander at this.

The Comet Is Coming
Trust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery

On their latest LP the futuro-jazz trio The Comet Is Coming encourage us to Trust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery. Whether or not you think such a sentiment is sound advice is up to you, but one thing that we can all agree on is that this is another incendiary set of electrified saxophonic fare from Shabaka Hutchings et al (he's the one from Sons Of Kemet, by the way). Kate Tempest guests on ‘Blood Of The Past’.

Ruby Rushton
Ironside

Ruby Rushton is not, as you would expect, a solo artist. Rather, Ruby Rushton is the name adopted by a London fusion quartet led by MPC-funk wizard Tenderlonious. The fourth Rushton LP Ironside finds Tenderlonious (real name Edward Cawthorne) largely leaving the electronics aside in favour of flute, sax and percussion. He and the other RR members create a cool post-jazz racket on Ironside. File next to Ezra Collective, Joe Armon-Jones and all those other cats.

Akira Ishikawa
Back To Rhythm

Japanese funk drummer Akira Ishikawa dropped his most famous effort back in 1975. It wouldn’t be on our website if it didn’t have that special flair that makes certain records so attractive to collectors: high energy, a unique approach, and near-total obscurity. Back to Rhythm was pretty much impossible to find until this Mr Bongo reissue.

Karl Hector & The Malcouns
Non Ex Orbis

Third album, and first in ten years from kraut-jazz-rock band Karl Hector & The Malcouns. The band are from Munich, historically fertile ground for krautrock producing the likes of Amon Düül and Popol Vuh. On Non Ex Orbis The Malcouns do their city proud, improvising around their experimental brand of music.

Amazing Grace - The Complete Recordings

Amazing Grace is without a doubt Aretha Franklin’s greatest selling album, and as we reach the 50th anniversary, Rhino bring us something special. Recorded across two days in January of 1972 this special release holds the full recordings of both live shows that Aretha Franklin performed. Sheer soul gospel gold.

Nérija
Nérija EP

Domino grab a piece of the London jazz action by signing up group Nérija. The septet - which features celebrated young saxophonist Nubya Garcia, among others - showcase an energetic and soulful sound on this eponymous debut EP. Cuts like ‘The Fisherman’ and ‘Valleys’ are reminiscent of Tony Allen’s recent Blue Note output. Elsewhere on Nérija the band show their range with ‘For You’, a number that swells from bluesy ballad to a free-noise climax ala John Coltrane.

Colin Webster / Mark Holub
Nadir

Hard as nails free jazz from Colin Webster and Mark Holub. Together on Nadir the pair use their instruments, saxophone and drums respectively, to destructive effect. Rarely is jazz this disinterestedly bold. Webster is probably best known for his work with Sex Swing while Holub for the racket he and his band Led Bib are responsible for. On Raw Tonk Records.

Nick Waterhouse
Nick Waterhouse

Innovative Leisure drop the fourth LP from blue-eyed soulster Nick Waterhouse. As with the Michael Kiwanukas and Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reeds of this world, you get the sense that Waterhouse has quite possibly never listened to a record that wasn’t cut for either Motown or Stax. His eponymous record is a meticulous recreation of sounds and styles from an era that, sadly for Mr. Waterhouse, will never return.

Danish percussionist Marilyn Mazur shows off her new group Shamania, which is made up of high-grade female avant-jazz musicians from around Scandinavia. This is their first album together. Chicago Odense Ensemble

Chicago Odense Ensemble was a special collaboration between Causa Sui's Jonas Munk and Jakob Skøtt and members of Tortoise and Isotope217 recorded in 2008. Those long and varied sessions were then edited down to create a kind of dubby jazz fusion. The star of the show is Rob Mazurek who leads the way with the wonderfully pure timbre of his cornet. Durand Jones & The Indications
American Love Call

Durand Jones is one of them there soul singers. On his second studio LP American Love Call, Jones and his band The Indications do a fine job at recreating the sounds, sights and smells (not really - it's not scratch 'n' sniff) of the genre’s ‘70s golden age. Curtis Mayfield would be pleased with the lilting grooves and smooth vocals on tunes like 'Don’t You Know’. Aaron Frazer guests on a bunch of cuts.

Judy Pollak featuring 33 1/3
In Togetherness

In the late 1970’s, Judy Pollak hit the studio with her group 33 ⅓ and made In Togetherness, a record with major soul credentials. Dangerously rare in its original pressing, we can now enjoy Pollak’s work with ease thanks to this Athens Of The North reissue. Direct, heartfelt, funky music, with Judy’s particular vocal style a real pleasure.

Chris Potter
Circuits

Now, those who don’t know what’s up might assume that an album named Circuits, with cover art like that, was gonna be a suite of modular synth wogglings or Mego electro-fizz… But they would be wrong! Chris Potter is a noted saxophonist, and this album features him and his band jazing out big-time! Nice. On Edition Records.

Cochemea
All My Relations

Cochemea Gastelum is likely best known for being a sax player with Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings. All My Relations, on Daptone of course, is a profoundly personal reflection on his life. Jazz meets the music of his Yaqui and Mescalero Apache Indian heritage for an album written collectively and through improvisation.

Sun Ra
Monorails & Satellites - Works For Solo Piano Vol 1, 2, 3

There is always more to be found in the deep cosmos of the Sun Ra catalogue. Monorails & Satellite are solo piano albums recorded in 1966, which capture our intergalactic hero showing his unique yet virtuoso approach to the keys. Volume 3 of this triple set was never originally released, and the other two aren’t exactly easy to come by. Reissue sets on Cosmic Myth.

Barbara Howard
On The Rise

All's well that end's well huh. In 1968 one Steven Reece set up an independent label in the hope of attracting the attention of the majors. His choice of musician was Barbara Howard and the album On The Rise aimed to cast the net as wide as possible by featuring jazz, gospel and pop. The album flopped but the pair fell in love. Whatever else, On The Rise is worth it for its story. Reissued on Colemine Records.

Shahid Wheeler
Just One Dance Before You Go

Melodies International are a nifty little label. Their line is that they track down rare-ass, expensive-ass old club killers and reissue them at a fraction of the cost you’d pay for an original copy. The latest Melodies coup is Shahid Wheeler’s 1978 number ‘Just One Dance Before You Go’. A righteous disco joint of the Off The Wall school, this is the sort of dancefloor gold that never goes out of fashion. Here it is presented remastered and backed with the instrumental.

Eddie Russ
Fresh Out

Eddie Russ played piano with some jazz greats in the ’60s such as Sarah Vaughan, Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie. In the late ‘60s he moved into jazz fusion territory and was a major figure in the Detroit jazz underground. Deep Jazz classic, Fresh Out, was his debut solo LP. Reissue LP and CD on Soul Jazz Records.

The Morning Echoes Of Detroit
Echoes Of The Gospel

The Morning Echoes Of Detroit are gospel group. They formed way back in the pre-back-in-the-day days of the 1940s. Echoes Of The Gospel was originally released in 1967. Singer/songwriter Kelley Stoltz sent a copy of this album to Third Man Records as a thank you gift. The label were so pleased they decided to reissue it. LP on Third Man Records, remastered from original 1967 master tapes by Warren Defever.

Prince
Planet Earth

Sony are reissuing some later albums by Prince. Here’s album No.32, Planet Earth, which originally saw the light of day via a free giveaway CD with some bloody newspaper or other. Now it’s being reissued on CD and purple vinyl (what else?!) so at last you can buy your copy without feeling the shame of buying certain publications. A few of his old cohorts played on the album, including Michael Bland, Wendy & Lisa and Sheila E. Includes the singles Guitar, Chelsea Rogers and Future Baby Mama.

Prince
3121

3121 was the 31st studio album by Prince. It was originally released in 2006. Sony are reissuing a bunch of his later albums, and this one will be pressed on vinyl for the first time. It’s weird and funky and beautiful, just like you’d expect from the small purple one. Purple coloured vinyl and CD on Sony.

Prince
Musicology

Musicology was the first of three albums Prince released in 2004 and his 28th album in all.  Prince intended the album to to be a musical education to those who listened which seems like a bit of an arrogant thing to say, but then, Prince wouldn’t have been Prince without having saying stuff like that. Anyway, perhaps buy a copy and get yourself educated. Double purple coloured vinyl and CD on Sony.

Dwight Trible
Mothership

Dwight Trible is widely regarded as one of the greatest living jazz vocalists, central to the sound of L.A. jazz. He is adored by modern jazz masters such as Kamasi Washington. Incidentally, Washing plays on his new album, Mothership which mixes jazz, gospel, soul and psychedelic rock. Double LP and CD on Gearbox.
