Outside of the Stereolab reunion tour, American Football’s second sell-out show at the Brudenell was the most popular gig of the year with us Norman staffers, with three of us and an ex-member finding ourselves shrouded in their brand of blissful dream pop that night. The 2010s has seen a huge resurgence of emo, and American Football’s third LP is the final layer of icing on the cake for the decade.
Exclusive: clear with blue splatter vinyl LP on Big Scary Monsters, limited to 300 copies.Add to cart
Kim Gordon needs no introduction and our Will called it right straight away with this one, awarding it a clear-as-light 10/10 back in October..."a huge, complete album that seethes and whinnies with life". Relentlessly original and utterly fearless, don't be surprised to see this one at the business end of many AOTY lists this year.
Exclusive: transparent turquoise vinyl on Matador, limited to 300 copies.
Every year we half-expect Oh Sees to slow down a bit, and every year they don't. On their (checks notes) twenty-second album, John Dwyer's crew take their usual heavy riffing in a more expansive, Kraut-y, proggy direction. The longest track, the mind-battering Henchlock, clocks in at a mighty 21 minutes...just long enough for Dwyer to have written half of their next album, expected next week.
Exclusive: red & green coloured vinyl double LP on Castle Face, limited to 300 copies.
2019 was a big year for Big Thief with two critically-acclaimed albums for new label 4AD showcasing Adrianne Lenker's exquisite, open-hearted songwriting. Their third album, U.F.O.F., ranged from the plaintive catchiness of 'Cattails' to the earthier, defamiliarised 'Betsy' and impressed, it seems, all comers. Closely followed by a fourth album, Two Hands, that repeated the trick, Big Thief have firmly established themselves amongst the vanguard of 4AD's ever-interesting roster.
Exclusive: black vinyl LP with lyric poster, 50 copies.
The targets on the backs of black midi are large: a bit too Brit School, a bit too knowing, a bit too muso, a bit too made-for-the-Mercury-Prize. But 'Schlagenheim' is, no matter how you dice it, a remarkable debut album from a young band who are clearly ambitious about more substantial matters than just being famous. Without any doubt whatsoever, this is a band to watch.
Exclusive: 180g black vinyl LP on Rough Trade, with limited edition poster and 'Live in NYC' CD, 50 copies.
