Sonic Boom
All Things Being Equal

Sonic Boom is Peter Kember, formerly of Spacemen 3 and Spectrum, and if you’ve forgotten all about him, that’s probably understandable because he released his one and only album, Spectrum, as Sonic Boom in 1990. He is back, however, with All Things Being Equal, an album that he was encouraged to make by Stereolab’s Tim Gane. Well, I’m excited, what about you?

Spacemen 3
The Perfect Prescription

Reissue of Spacemen 3's second album, which was a wide eyed clash of droning guitar fuzz, psychedelic avant-garage propulsion and heady atmosphere. The line up shift had given rise to an evolved sound, allowing for more space to breathe, casting those shimmering tremolos further out into the stratosphere.

Spectrum
Highs, Lows, and Heavenly Blows

That title is just … wow. Ok. Highs, Lows And Heavenly Blows (hi mum) originally dropped in 1994 and now gets a reissue via Medical Records (Pram, Martin Jenkins). The main protagonist in Spectrum is ex-Spacemen 3 member Sonic Boom, and the influence of that group’s gnarled psychedelic fantasia is very much on display here. These trippy soundscapes meet in the middle of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Orb and Screamadelica-era Primal Scream.

Spectrum
Live Chronicles Volume 2

Spectrum is Sonic Boom, who is Pete Kember, who was in Spacemen 3. Which is to say that this is a lifelong psych traveller we are dealing with here. These cosmic recordings were performed live in front of an enthused crowd in Tokyo, and things get good and spacey. Live Chronicles Volume 2 is reissued by Space Age Recordings, with artwork from Hajime Ouchi.

Spectrum
Live Chronicles Volume 1

Spectrum is Sonic Boom, who is Pete Kember, who was in Spacemen 3. Which is to say that this is a lifelong psych traveller we are dealing with here. These cosmic recordings were rained down upon grateful audiences in Newcastle and London in the very early 90’s, and they get pretty ecstatic. Live Chronicles Volume 1 is reissued by Space Age Recordings.

Spacemen 3
Sound of Confusion

Always good to see the Spacemen 3’s Sound Of Confusion again. This Fire edition of the legendary acid rockers’ 1986 debut LP is all present and correct, four originals and three covers. Regardless of who’s written the songs the 3 still give ‘em hell, locking down their hyperreal Velvet Underground sound with a visceral bite unmatched by their scores of imitators. More than three decades on from its release Sound Of Confusion still blows the competition out of the water.
