We all know that Simon Joyner is one of the best American songwriters don't we? Don't we? Well Gillian Welch, Conor Oberst and Kevin Morby all sing his praises and this love of his peers is much deserved. The Omaha songwriter has a dark soul which has drawn comparisons with Townes Van Zandt and Lou Reed. Maybe in these dark days, now is his time.
Simon Joyner and David Nance here take on one of the Rolling Stones’ lesser-loved albums in full, ‘covering’ Goat’s Head Soup in a fairly freewheeling manner. This version sheds the classic rock vibes in favour of fuzzy DIY, and is happy to totally rewrite songs where Joyner and Nance feel they can do better than Mick and Keith and the boys. A bold reimagining, out on Grapefruit.
Simon Joyner worked his way up with a variety of alternative Americana heroes, making fractured folk music that sits along side Wilco's finest work and Will Oldham's most obscured masterpieces. With a distinctive voice with its own subtle twang and disregard for certain articulations, Joyner speaks the language of country without speaking its clichés. Grass, Branch & Bone works at its own pace, as evidenced on "You Got Under My Skin", a track based around his vocal and a tracing guitar melody. It's unbelievably pretty, of course.
