Purple Mountains
Purple Mountains

Here it is then. Purple Mountains. The new name for David Berman. The new name for Silver Jews. We were promised hand crafted country rock full of wit and wisdom and and that's exactly what we got. It's rare a late career album builds so thoughtfully on a musical legacy. From 'Magaritas at the Mall' to 'I Loved Being My Mother's Son', 'Purple Mountains' is an instant classic.

Silver Jews
Tanglewood Numbers

Tanglewood Numbers was the 2005 album that saw the Silver Jews become something more of a rock band rather than the acoustic country-ish affair invented to underpin David Berman's poetry. It saw former Pavement folks Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich back in the band and was an upbeat, almost bar room affair as always with clever and insidious lyrics lurking beneath the country rock bluster.

American Water

Is American Water different from UK water?  Find out by buying the 20 year re-issue of this classic album by Silver Jews. Hear David Berman's lyrical poise set to a half speed master for extra good sound. Wallow in the gentle alt rock of tracks like 'Honk If You're Horny' and 'Sent in the Clouds'. Where is he by the way? We miss him!

The Natural Bridge

Ah the late, lamented Silver Jews. The Natural Bridge is one of their best albums. Its careful strumming and hints of country are a perfect bedrock for the beautiful and droll poetry of David Berman. It's this lightness of touch delivery without the presence of regular members Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich that actually elevates the Natural Bridge and ensures it is one of Berman's most enduring works.

Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea

Ah...well we thought this might be back in stock this week. Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea was the final Silver Jews album before David Berman disbanded the group for the unusual reason that his musical output could never undo the damage his dad (a corporate lawyer) had done to the world. It's probably the Jews most polished record and sees Berman's distinctive baritone sitting on top of lush country-ish arrangements. Album highlight San Francisco DC is a hilarious seven minute narrative that is not to be missed.

Early Times

While David Berman (RIP) was always the lynchpin of Silver Jews, back in the project’s formative days he also had input from Pavement homies Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. 'Early Times' yokes together two EPs that were cut in this lineup, 1992’s ‘Dime Map Of The Reef’ and 1993’s ‘The Arizona Record’. Ultra-lo-fi, raw and real, 'Early Times' sets the scene for one of the most celebrated and vital discographies in modern indie.

Bright Flight

Bright Flight was Silver Jews 2001 era album and perhaps the one where they started to shake off the lo-fi tag and introduce a more obviously countrified twang to their sound. In fact David Berman had moved to Nashviille to record the album and the musical history of that town seeps through its grooves. Here for the first time Berman duets with wife Cassie resulting in a classic harmonic sound possibly comparable to Neil Young and Emmylou Harris's duets from a couple of decades before.....and then there's the lyrics but if we told you about them we'd be here all day.
