Jónsi & Alex Somers
Riceboy Sleeps (2019 Analogue Remaster)

Jonsi and Alex Somers don't just play together, they work together... or they did once on the Riceboy Sleeps album, originally released in 2009 but now available on posh triple vinyl with rounded corners and now including the All Animals EP. This is gorgeous ambience of the highest order which will appeal to people who like Sigur Ros but also to people (me) who don't like Sigur Ros but know good atmospheric downtempo electronics when they hear it. Delve in.

Frakkur
2000 - 2004

In the first years of the 21st Century Jónsi - the one from Sigur Rós, not the one who represented Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest a few years back - was experimenting heavily with electronic music. Operating under the name Frakkur, Jónsi busied himself on a variety of laptops, synthesisers and DAWs during breaks from touring. Now some of the music he made in this time is collected for new compilation '2000 - 2004'. There’s a wide breadth of stuff here - some of it comes close to the music of the Rós, but there are also notes of Autechre, Jan Jelinek and Four Tet across these two-dozen tracks.

Sigur Rós
22° Lunar Halo

Sigur Ros recently reworked some of their old output for the soundtrack of a dance work by choreographer Cheng Tsung-Lung. The new music they forged from old means also rank as some of the band’s most arresting output, a collection of detailed drones and serious rhythm workouts that aren’t a million miles away from Einstürzende Neubauten. Don’t believe us? See for yourself - the show’s score has now been released through KRUNK under the title 22° Lunar Halo.

Sigur Rós
Variations On Darkness

Lately the Icelandic group Sigur Ros have spent a fair bit of time writing music for dance pieces. As well as 22° Lunar Halo - the score they created for a new choreography by Cheng Tsung-Lung - les Ros also turned out Variations On Darkness for a performance by the Icelandic Dance Company at their own Nordur og nidur festival. Comprising of new material and re-workings of some older tracks, the two side-long pieces of Variations On Darkness find the band at their most expressive and ambitious. Everything from icy drone to broiling noise to the organic power electronics of Ben Frost get a look-in here.

Ágætis byrjun (20th Anniversary Edition)

Sigur Rós mark the 20th anniversary of their 1999 breakthrough Ágætis Byrjun with an expanded re-issue on vinyl and CD. Rarities, demos and a full 95-minute live concert provide the final word on the spectral majesty of an album that provided the foundations for the Icelandic post-rockers’ acclaimed career.

Alex Somers & Sigur Rós
Black Mirror: Hang The DJ (Music From The Netflix Original Series)

Composer & producer Alex Somers rejoined Jónsi & pals of Sigur Rós to soundtrack the fourth season of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror series. The results are collected here, including a couple of outright songs. Typically brittle, unhurried Rós soundscapes, swelling with deep emotive evocation and atmosphere, prevail throughout.

Kjartan Sveinsson
Der Klang der Offenbarung des Göttlichen

Der Klang der Offenbarung des Göttlichen is a grand operatic work by Kjartan Sveinsson, who you might know from his time in Sigur Ros. This, however, is a full-blown orchestral suite, with romantic themes dominating both music and libretto. This recording of the piece is released as a double 10” set via The Vinyl Factory.

Amiina
Fantômas

Icelandic sonic adventurers and frequent Sigur Ros collaborators Amiina come through with a modern-day accompaniment to an olden-days classic. Fantomas is a work of early silent cinema that was admired by, among others, the surrealist Rene Magritte. Using loops, drones, pianos and strings, Amiina’s soundtrack breathes new life into a work now in its second century.

Sigur Rós
Ágætis byrjun

The album that catapulted Sigur Ros from the obscurity of 'Von' into international stardom, world tours, BBC tie ins and a string of hugely successful albums. Before the icy bleakness of '( )', this sees the band full of hope and wonder. Massive sounding, richly orchestrated post-rock executed in vivid style.

Sigur Rós
Valtari Film Experiment

Sigur Ros are one of the world’s best loved post-rock bands, creating soundscapes that send the listener of strange, ethereal journeys. To complement their glacial sound, they invited directors to create films to accompany the tracks from their sixth album Valtari, with no brief. This is what they came up with. Featuring indie movie stars Elle Fanning and John Hawkes, and the work of Alma Har'el and Ryan McGinley. DVD and Blu-ray.
