Roy Montgomery, Emma Johnston
After Nietzsche

New Zealand-based artists Roy Montgomery and Emma Johnston get together once more for another collaborative album. Unlike last year’s Suffuse, however, the veteran Montgomery is writing specifically for his partner’s voice rather than for a series of guest vocalists, and the result is quite a different sounding beast.

Roy Montgomery
Suffuse

The Pin Group/Dissolve/Dadamah member Roy Montgomery drops his latest LP via Grapefruit. Montgomery has seemingly got bored of singing after all his time in the music game. As such he lets others take centre-stage on Suffuse while he potters around in the background with his guitar and effects pedals. Julianna Barwick, She Keeps Bees and Katie von Schleicher are among the guests whose vocals are tacked on to these psych-y, shoegaze-y and very loud-y numbers.

Roy Montgomery
H: Bender

Dadamah and The Pin Group member Roy Montgomery hasn’t released an album in over ten years, but now that he’s decided to make a return, he’s really going for it. Roy is now releasing an interlinked series of albums, titled R, M, H and Q. On H: Bender, his sound skims the edges of the collaborative work he has done with the likes of Bardo Pond, but remains firmly his own. LP on Grapefruit.

Roy Montgomery
Last Year's Man

New Zealand outsider dude Roy Montgomery takes on a Leonard Cohen song, the early 1971 morose-masterpiece ‘Last Year’s Man’. Roy tackles it in lovely droney style, using the particular sounds of the Omnichord, along with the assistance of Jessica Moss. Add in a second track, ‘After Vermeer’, and you’ve got a very fine little 10” release.

The Pin Group
The Go To Town

The Pin Group are an early classic example of New Zealand’s legendary Flying Nun label sound: underground DIY indie with bright pop melodies pushing through the guitar fuzz. The Go To Town, released in 1982, was only their third release, but it was already to be their last. Five fabulous tracks, featuring an expanded five-piece line-up. This EP is reissued to vinyl by Superior Viaduct. Edition of 1000.

My my, that’s a lot of Roy. 4CD or 4LP sets.

The Pin Group
Ambivalence

The Pin Group are an early classic example of New Zealand’s legendary Flying Nun label sound: underground DIY indie with bright pop melodies pushing through the guitar fuzz. Roy Montgomery hasn’t released an album in over ten years, but now that he’s decided to make a return, he’s really going for it. Roy is now releasing an interlinked series of albums, titled R, M, H and Q. On R: Tropic Of Anodyne, it feels like a storm is brewing in the sky above his strident solo guitar sound. LP on Grapefruit.

Roy Montgomery
Q: Transient Global Amnesia

Roy Montgomery hasn’t released an album in over ten years, but now that he’s decided to make a return, he’s really going for it. Roy is now releasing an interlinked series of albums, titled R, M, H and Q. This fourth one, subtitled Transient Global Amnesia, is a real treat for fans of atmospheric guitarscapes, with languid coils of reverb all over the place. LP on Grapefruit.

Roy Montgomery
M: Darkmotif Dancehall

Dadamah and The Pin Group member Roy Montgomery hasn’t released an album in over ten years, but now that he’s decided to make a return, he’s really going for it. Roy is now releasing an interlinked series of albums, titled R, M, H and Q. The M album, which is subtitled Darkmotif Dancehall, is perhaps the most forthright of the set, with drum machines and storming riff-work.
