Madlib's status as a hip-hop producer and beat-maker extraordinaire was never in doubt, but in 2000, after digesting lot of tasty mushrooms, he gave birth to rapping alter-ego Quasimoto, with the classic record 'The Unseen'. On that record was the jazzed-up and impossibly trippy "Come On Feet", which stepped out as its own single. In a shock twist, the remix is the original and the original is the remix -- weird, but true. There's an instrumental to grab here, too.
Stones Throw celebrate the majestic, high-as-a-kite rapping of Quasimoto with a bunch of defiantly old school tunes from 'The Unseen', the first and best record from Madlib's mysterious alias. Fronting this release are three originals -- "Microphone Mathematics", of course, along with "Discipline 99" and "Low Class Conspiracy" - while the flip has the instrumentals for all wannabe Madlibs out there. Samples on samples.
Couple of tasty Quasimoto reissue 12"s coming in from Stones Throw. 'Basic Instinct' originally came out in 2000, but didn't feature on that year's 'The Unseen' LP, a warped feel-good samplescape full of Madlib alter-ego Lord Quas's pitch-shifted rhymes and easygoing hip-hop beats. Great chance to grab this classic while it's back on wax.
As well as the Unseen-era 'Basic Instinct' EP, Stones Thrown are reissuing this 2005 slice of Quasimoto which was released in the run-up to the 'Further Adventures of Lord Quas' album, with the title track's warped good vibes that disintegrate into oddball Beefheartian weirdness and 'Greenery' both appearing on said album. Instrumentals are included. Can't go far wrong with a bit of Madlib's goofball alter-ego.
