Summer In Abaddon (15th Anniversary Edition)

Now I feel old. It's been 15 years since Pinback released 'Summer In Abaddon'-  an album which came after the two albums I really liked by them which are now presumably even older. 'Summer In Abaddon' hardened their lovely guitar pop a little, bringing in more obviously emo-influences to the duos rhetoric. For the uninitiated, these former members of 3 Mile Pilot and Heavy Vegetable are somewhat in the literate style of Death Cab for Cutie.

Some Offcell Voices

Before they were the touring behemoth they later became, Pinback was simply a project for members of Three Mile Pilot and Heavy Vegetable to hone their songwriting craft. Early on they produced two distinctive EPs which have now been collected together onto one slab of vinyl. Pinback have always made super soft super literate guitar pop and here their beginnings have been remastered and presented in a way that stands up as a full album and not the collection of outtakes EPs can sometimes become.

Blue Screen Life

Who knew that 'Blue Screen Life' sold over 100,000 copies? I honestly thought I was the only person to own a copy. It was the second record by post Three Mile Pilot band Pinback who continued to deliver excellent indie records over the years but there's something about 'Blue Screen Life' that sets it apart from the others. Their sound is gentle twisting guitar pop with an emo edge to the vocals  - kind of like some kind of post hardcore Field Music in terms of unconventional structures but the overall sound is more likely to appeal to fans of Death Cab For Cutie.

Summer In Abaddon

After a couple of LPs for Ace Fu around the turn of the century, Touch & Go provided a home for Pinback’s third full-length Summer In Abaddon. The 2004 album is a prime example of the stirring indie-rock that the band did so well around that time. Contemporaries like Wolf Parade, Les Savy Fav and Death Cab For Cutie would have all been happy to have come up with something like Summer In Abaddon.
