Tomaga & Pierre Bastien
Bandiera Di Carta

Prolific London-based production duo Tomaga, responsible for over a dozen records since forming just five years ago, and composer / musical instrument builder / former Rephlex star Pierre Bastien team up for this intriguing collaboration. Bandiera Di Carta lands up somewhere between free-ranging jazz and percussive, avant-garde soundscapes.

Pierre Bastien
Tinkle Twang ’n Tootle

Ah! Pierre Bastien, the Parisian experimental composer who builds his own instruments from Meccano. He’s been building instruments since he was a child. His career stretches back to the late ‘70s, but he got involved with Meccano in the mid ‘80s. His new album, Tinkle Twang ‘n Tootle, adds a childlike, playful charm to his experimental approach which underlines his desire for musical exploration.

Pierre Bastien & Cabo San Roque / Anna Homler, Adrian Northover, Dave Tucker
FTS003

Another split 12” from the First Terrace label. This one here features improvisations from the fresh and adventurous trio of Adrian Northover, Anna Homler and Dave Tucker on the one side, and a Pierre Bastien piece for Cabo San Roque’s massive orchestra of mechanical machines. Very varied material here then, but see if you can draw some links between these two fine sides eh?

The Mecanoncentric Worlds of Pierre Bastien

Pierre Bastien started building his orchestra, utilising the once popular kids construction toy Meccano, in the mid-’80s. The Mecanoncentric Worlds of Pierre Bastien captures his weird and wonderful creation at its best, playing all sorts of percussion with more unusual items such as rubber bands, nails and paper. This live performance was recorded at Studio M, Novi Sad, Serbia.

Pierre Bastien
Blue As An Orange

Pierre Bastien is a french composer who is famed for making his own experimental mechanical instruments. Most famously he built an entire orchestra out of the children’s construction toy Meccano in the mid-eighties. Morphine Records seem delighted (and rightly so) to have the pioneer of robotic music signed to their label. As Blue As An Orange is available on vinyl LP and has delightfully pleasing cover art.
