Philip Glass
Glassworks

Is Philip Glass really conceited or does the word "glass" just work surprisingly well with everything? Either way, this record is called Glassworks and characterises its composing protagonist as a gentle, quietened artist, interested in crafting meditative and minimal works. Recommended for the Glass fan who wants to take it easy, for once. You deserve a day off.

Philip Glass
Candyman (Original 1992 Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Neo-classical stalwart Philip Glass was known to dabble in the film scoring business now and then -- he's produced works for the epic ambient landscape movie Koyaanisqatsi, as well as the thrilling drama the Truman Show, about that dude we're all watching on TV (who, ironically, is Jim Carrey). 'Candyman' is one of his most renowned soundtracks, and while the film was originally released in 1992, you can now hear the soundtrack on vinyl, right here in 2014.

Philip Glass
Jane (Original Motion Picture Soundtracks)

The minimalist pioneer’s score for Brett Morgen’s documentary about chimpanzee researcher Jane Goodall. The hour-long soundtrack features music that runs the gamut from full-on orchestral bombast to understated piano pieces coloured with subtle use of strings. Those  trademark appregios are often a feature, of course. Double LP.

Philip Glass
Heroes Symphony

Based on one of David Bowie’s most avant-garde, experimental albums ‘Heroes’, the album ‘Heroes Symphony’ (aka ‘Symphony #4 “Heroes”’) was produced by American composer Philip Glass in 1996. Comprising a rich orchestra of string and wind instruments, Glass approaches the material from the opposite end of the spectrum to Bowie and Eno’s minimalistic original.

Philip Glass
Candyman 2 – Farewell To The Flesh

One Way Static release modernist composer Philip Glass’ unlikely soundtrack to Candyman 2 - Farewelll to the Flesh. On this first pressing vinyl LP there are creepy, repetitive motifs that gradually blur together, choral voices and baffling organ arpeggios. An astonishing soundtrack. This is surely the only release this year to satisfy horror soundtrack buffs and fans of minimal twentieth century classical music.

Philip Glass
Low Symphony

Philip Glass took three recordings from the sessions of 'Low' -- David Bowie's most famous collaboration with Brian Eno, and his first foray into kraut influenced rock (the first in his Berlin trilogy) -- and turned them into this symphony. The tracks in question are all instrumentals: "Warszawa", "Subterraneans" and "Some Are". It was performed by the Brooklyn Philharmonic orchestra.

Philip Glass
Buddha Machine

The latest model of the Buddha Machine is an especially exciting one: it comes loaded with loops of the music of Philip Glass, original minimalist. Glass’s works are hypnotic and beautiful enough even before they are Buddha-looped, so this is a crucial little device. Available in red or blue, and with better sound quality than previous models.

Phillip Glass
The Illusionist - Music From The Film

The Illusionist, a magical period piece set of a film set in 1800’s Vienna, arrived in 2006 with an original score by minimalist maestro Philip Glass. His music is as grand and direct as ever, with the main motifs sweeping around with irresistible momentum. Recorded pristinely by the Czech Film Orchestra, this music is released on vinyl by Music On Vinyl.

Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass
Passages

Two essential legends of different genres, united! Philip Glass is the face of contemporary minimalist composition, and Ravi Shankar is one of the most widely Western-known composers of Indian classical music. Wow! Passages, their 1990 collaboration, is a remarkably successful melding, all spiralling melody and stately texture. Reissue on Music On Vinyl.

Philip Glass / Alfred Schnittke
Violin Concerto No. 1 / Concerto Grosso No. 5

Minimalist maestro Philip Glass directs his talents towards interpreting the work of Soviet and German composer Alfred Schnittke. Violin Concerto No. 1 / Concerto Grosso No. 5 capture Schnittke’s rich polystylistic approaches and grand melodies, tempered slightly by Glass’ delicate and restrained attitude. The 180g vinyl LP on Deutsche Grammophon includes a download code.

Phillip Glass
Songs From The Trilogy

Phillip Glass is most noted for his minimalist repetition, but now approaching his 80th birthday and still performing with his ensemble, he has a lot more in his back catalogue than that. Songs From The Trilogy is a collection of pieces taken from three of his operas - Einstein On The Beach, Satyagraha and Akhnaten.

Philip Glass / Kronos Quartet
Dracula

In 1998, Philip Glass took pity on the 1931 Bela Lugosi-starring silent film Dracula, because it was never before given the gift of a score. With regular collaborators Kronos Quartet in tow, Glass composed a dramatic set of eerie string pieces, with touches of his melodic minimalism here and there. 180g double LP on Orange Mountain Music: this reissue is the first time this soundtrack has appeared on vinyl.

Marco Beltrami & Philip Glass
Fantastic Four : Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Even without the Koyanisqaatsian epic visual build-up, Philip Glass is still on top of the original soundtrack game, now together with composer Marco Beltrami. The duo has created an intense, innocent and impressive score for the Fantastic Four. The recurrent themes, slowly rising to greatness, still remain. First pressing is limited to 750 marbled copies.
