Keiji Haino / Jim O'Rourke / Oren Ambarchi
This Dazzling, Genuine

Startling to note that this is already the eighth release from the free rock supergroup. The trio are masters at wrenching great textural and dynamic variety from the basic power trio format, which here is augmented with some unusual instrumental additions. O’Rourke plays EMS Synthi as well as often heavily-effected bass, Haino sings in English, and besides guitar tackles electronics, flute and toy piano. Ambarchi’s playing runs the gamut from subtle cymbal work to full-on frenzy. A characteristically lovely double LP presentation from Ambarchi’s Black Truffle label, designed by Stephen O’Malley and cut by Rashad Becker.

Oren Ambarchi, Jim O'Rourke & U-zhaan
Hence

Jim O’Rourke and Oren Ambarchi are capable of producing stunning work at the drop of a hat, both solo and in many many combinations. Here they continue their dreamy series of duo albums, with the exciting addition of tabla player U-zhaan. Hence features two sides of seamlessly developing sound that exude a casual, beautiful mastery. On Editions Mego.

Certainly

This unholy alliance between Oren Ambarchi (AUS), Crys Cole (CAN) and Leif Elggren (SWE) took place at a residency in Stockholm’s EMS Studios in 2016. The story goes that the harsh winds blew off the windows, prompting the trio to take desperate measures to stay warm and record. Sounds more like a contact mic passing through a cow’s intestines to me. It’s a good sound.

Oren Ambarchi
Sleepwalker's Conviction

Oren Ambarchi collaboration #274 is with Ilan Volkov and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, as well as percussion ensemble Speak Percussion. Sleepwalker’s Conviction thus gives Ambarchi an unusually large canvas with which to work, and boy does he make use of it. Limited to 300 LP copies on Ambarchi’s own Black Truffle imprint.

Oren Ambarchi, Konrad Sprenger, Phillip Sollmann
Panama / Suez

Multi-instrumentalists Oren Ambrachi, Konrad Sprenger, and Phillip Sollman are joining forces to create a hypnotic drone/techno classic. Released on Ostgut's ambient and experimental A-TON label. Imagine Steve Reich, Keith Fullerton Whitman, and Gas being blasted through the Berghain’s speakers at the same time. Truly a 12” to lose yourself in.

Face Time

Another collaboration for Black Truffle between intrepid sound manipulators Oren Ambarchi, Kassel Jaeger and James Rushford. Like its predecessor, Face Time comes on splendid coloured vinyl (neon orange this time) and boasts cover design from Stephen O)))’Malley. The trio produce seductively serene sonic fields, with murmuring textures, quiet harmonics and crumbled, wiry dub rhythms.

Live Knots

‘Knots’ was of course the half-hour centerpiece of Oren Ambarchi’s excellent Audience Of One album, a massive piece that spirals out from a guitar / drums core into a number of other instrumental areas. Now PAN are releasing two live versions, each with a different ensemble and focusing on different elements. Typically gorgeous PAN packaging too… Oooh, you’ll need this.

Oren Ambarchi
Stacte Karaoke II

Titan of wilfully obtuse improvisation, Oren Ambarchi has a new 12" out! The Stacte Karaoke II EP features three tracks, one of which he named: "It Ain’t Humid But It Sure Is Hot". (He clearly spent his early summer in Leeds). For the recording sessions Ambarchi assembled some monster riffers, in this the second volume in the now-infamous shredding series. Once again, design by Stephen O'Malley. Mastered by Rashad Becker. !2" record on Black Truffle.

Gravetemple
Impassable Fears

Juicy heavy darkness here from Gravetemple, the experimental power trio of key Sunn O))) man Stephen O’Malley, terrifying Sunn O))) and Mayhem vocalist Attila Csihar, and all-round sound wizard Oren Ambarchi. Impassable Fears is a welcome return, a record that throbs with ferocious metallic power and sharp minimalist sonic details. CD / LP editions on Svart.

Crys Cole & Oren Ambarchi
Hotel Record

Experimental music's greatest friend-haver, Oren Ambarchi, is at it again, collaborating once more with the irreplaceable Crys Cole. Four sides of drowsy improvisations see the duo carving sounds out of disparate, often contradicting tools that meld together in chance harmony. Organs, guitars and synths coalesce to create a serendipitous world of the sleepy.

Oren Ambarchi & Jim O'Rourke
Behold

‘Behold’ is Oren Ambarchi and Jim O'Rourke’s second collaborative release. With Ambarchi mostly on Guitar and Drums and Jim O'Rourke playing a selection of Synthesizers and piano and both playing various other, sometimes unidentifiable things to create a minimalist, slow burning, repetitive, melodic rhythm.

Oren Ambarchi
Hubris

Oren Ambarchi continues with his bold mission to make an infinite number of records with every notable musician in the world. Hubris is a mighty work that contains contributions from Arto Lindsay, Mark Fell and regular collaborator Jim O’Rourke, as well as Ricardo Villalobos and Keith Fullerton Whitman and crys cole… Amazingly, Oren knits them all together into a groove-heavy coherent whole, Out on Editions Mego.

Oren Ambarchi, Kassel Jaeger, James Rushford
Pale Calling

Oren Ambarchi is back on the collaborations wagon again, this time with James Rushford and Kassel Jaeger. Pale Calling was recorded in the GRM studios in Paris, and it seems the musicians played to the space: this is a slip-sliding concréte extravaganza, with subtle electronics, field recordings and all sorts of other materials creating a beguiling atmosphere. On Ambarchi’s Black Truffle label.

Ricardo Villalobos & Oren Ambarchi
Hubris Variation

Oren Ambarchi’s recent Hubris record has a notable roster of guests, including the mighty Ricardo Villalobos. With talent like that on board, it seems a wise choice to let the producer expand on his role, which he does here. The grooves of the original piece are yet more pronounced and expanded on Hubris Variation, providing a delicious fresh piece of the puzzle. 12” on Ambarchi’s Black Truffle.

Oren Ambarchi / Stefano Pilia / Massimo Pupillo
Aithein

Perennial collaborator Oren Ambarchi is at it again, this time teaming with Stefano Pilia and the thundering bass-power of Massimo Pupillo of Zu. Aithen is a document of a 2015 live set, which works it’s way up from simmering beginnings to crushing eruptions of tonal wonder. Edition of 300 copies on 180g vinyl, from Karlrecords.

Oren Ambarchi & Johan Berthling
Tongue Tied

Johan Berthling (of Tape) and Oren Ambarchi (of everything) have worked together before, with a duo album a decade ago and Ambarchi’s guest appearances with Berthling’s white-hot trio Fire! Tongue Tied sort of combines both approaches, with both minimal tone explorations and rhythmic propulsion coming through at various points. On Hapna.

Ambarchi / O'Malley / Dunn
Shade Themes From Kairos

Imagine if there was apocalypse right now and the only people left on earth were Oren Ambarch and Stephen O'Malley, and they had to repopulate the world with guitar drones. That's what happens in 'Themes From Kairos', more or less, with the two drone merchants on the bill scoring Randall Dunn's film. The two artists make an evocative soundtrack of guitar, loops and analogue synth.

Oren Ambarchi
Quixotism

Oren Ambarchi continues his public affront to all other artists purporting to be 'prolific' with yet another release. 'Quixotism' is an LP performed in five distinct suites, each deliberately and precisely driven by one particular constant: the percussive work of Thomas Brinkmann. Aside from this, Ambarchi lets his experimental compositions wonder through different spaces, motifs and timbres.

Oren Ambarchi / Massimo Pupillo
Subsound Split Series #4

The latest edition in Subsound Records’ series of split LPs, in this case featuring Oren Ambarchi and Massimo Pupillo. Ambarchi has been on a seemingly never-ending roll of super-productivity for years now, and is always worth hearing. Pupillo is the bass player for heavy Italian noise-jazz-metallers Zu, and he always slays.

Oren Ambarchi & Eli Keszler
Alps

Oren Ambarchi is currently the living embodiment of Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop", whether you like it or not: the dude just can't stop putting stuff out. 'Alps' is another collaboration, this time with drone artist and part-time percussionist Eli Keszler, and wades through a mix of feedback-driven noise and organic dissonant drumming. This party will never die.

Richard Pinhas / Oren Ambarchi
Tikkun

Richard Pinhas, who used to be in the proggy French band Heldon has been very busy with collaborations in the last few years, and here he has teamed up with another serial collaborator, Oren Ambarchi (and the even more prolific Masami Akita of Merzbow also appears). Synthy, but also very noisy. With bonus DVD of a live show!
