Old Man Gloom
Heavy + Heavy = Heavy appears to be the formula behind this ‘supergroup’: members of Converge, ISIS, Mamiffer (and so on) have gotten together to produce another record of blasted fury music. NO was first released in 2012, but Old Man Gloom have seen fit to reissue it on Hydra Head. Double LP.
The heavier-than-heavy doom metal super-group Old Man Gloom capture their intense live show on Mickey Rookey Live at London. The group’s messy mixture of industrial, doom and noise elements is presented here in all its glory. This was recorded by the band Circle and pressed to double vinyl LP by Full Contact/Ektro, and it sounds great.
Old Man Gloom's aka Aaron Turner (ISIS) and Santos Montano (Zozobra) are a post-metal, post-math, post-hardcore, post-rock riff generator. Originally released in 1999, their debut ‘Meditations In B’ is a dark record combining the elements of doom and metal to create an underlying presence that is disturbingly haunting.
With each group contributing members and styles, ISIS, Converge and Cave In become Old Man Gloom. Part two of the new album seems to be more of a deviation from previous work. That means more electronics and more atmospheric textures, although there’s still plenty of really loud riffs, vast, seemingly unending crescendos and Aaron Turner’s agonised vocals. Coloured vinyl LP limited to 2000 worldwide.
Combining the talents of ISIS, Converge and Cave In, Old Man Gloom produce the monolithic and high intensity doom/sludge/metalcore hybrid racket you would expect. Releasing one album split into two parts, part one follows previous work much more closely. Although it’s still a daring mixture of extreme harsh noise, D-beat aggro and dense guitar. Coloured vinyl LP limited to 2000 worldwide.
