Fred Beethoven

Swell Maps' Nikki Sudden began releasing solo output after his band broke up in the 1980s, and 'Fred Beethoven' is a newly unearthed record of material through his career. It contains two covers of Chuck Berry's rockabilly standard, "Johnny B. Goode", as well as new versions of song from Sudden's debut solo record, 'Forest Fire'. 'Fred Beethoven' shows off Sudden's affection for the traditions of rock music and early punk, from T. Rex to the New York Dolls.  Tracks: CD: Johnny B. Nikki Sudden
Dark Rags at Dawn

Dark Rags at Dawn is a definitive, career-spanning 7 LP box set compiling the solo LPs from Swell Maps founder Nikki Sudden. Material here includes his revered masterpiece Texas and Dead Men Tell No Tales as well as other landmark LPs Waiting On Egypt, The Bible Belt, the Dave Kusworth-era LPs Jacobites and Robespierre’s Velvet Basement alongside Sudden’s Rowland S. Howard collaboration Kiss You Kidnapped Charabanc. Each LP draws on Sudden’s propensity for injecting punk in the rock ‘n’ roll of the Rolling Stones and T. Rex. The results are raw and inspired; this is essential listening.

Nikki Sudden & The Jacobites
Dead Men Tell No Tales

In founding Swell Maps, the post-punk prefacing Birmingham art-snots, Nikki Sudden and his drumming brother Epic Soundtracks charted new territory for racket and corrosive guitar. But after folding Swell Maps at the dawn of the ’80s, Nikki Sudden plowed through another decade’s worth of terrifically fertile ground. Drawing on his devotion to the Rolling Stones and T. Rex—along sideg uitarist Dave Kusworth as Jacobites, plus a cheekily named cohort of British sidemen—Nikki Sudden cut a string of raw, inspired rock ‘n’ roll records, etched with double-edged travel melancholia and hard-bitten punk dejection.

Nikki Sudden & Rowland S. Howard
Kiss You Kidnapped Charabanc

Nikki Sudden’s collaboration with former Birthday Party guitarist Rowland S. Howard peaked with Kiss You Kidnapped Charabanc, the duo’s 1987 first and only full length. Howard’s sinister guitar flourishes and malevolent lyrical motifs lead Sudden’s paisley-clad disposition into murkier waters, drudging the same sludge inhabited by The Gun Club and Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds. Drawing on his devotion to the Rolling Stones and T. Rex—along side guitarist Dave Kusworth as Jacobites, plus a cheekily named cohort of British sidemen—Nikki Sudden cut a string of raw, inspired rock ‘n’ roll records, etched with double-edged travel melancholia and hard-bitten punk dejection.
