Nick Cave and Nicholas Lens
L.I.T.A.N.I.E.S.

The incomparable Nick Cave collaborates once again with Belgian composer Nicholas Lens for another operatic project. Constructed under lockdown, Cave wrote a collection of twelve librettos for Lens who then transformed the texts into ‘L.I.T.A.N.I.E.S.’. This is a restful and meditative collection brought to life by a revolving cast of guest vocalists.

Idiot Prayer - Nick Cave Alone At Alexandra Palace

There he is. A man alone at the piano. Sir Nick Cave. Just like every other musician, Sir Nick couldn't tour during the Covid mess - but unlike every other musician, Cave donned his blackest suit and streamed himself playing without an audience in a big, empty room at Alexandra Palace. The results were, of course, breathtaking - Cave gave a sombre performance which straddled output from his entire career. And now you can own it, under the name of 'Idiot Prayer - Nick Cave Alone At Alexandra Palace', on double-LP or double-CD.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis
The Proposition (Original Soundtrack)

‘Mr. Cave, Mr. Ellis - welcome. We have a Proposition for you. How would you like to try your hand at scoring a film - a film starring Ray Winston, no less. We envisage that the music you’ll make for it will be quite similar to your work with The Bad Seeds but with less singing. The more abstract, synth-heavy tracks will pave the way for records you’ll make in a decade’s time, though obviously you don’t know that yet. You’ll also go on to do some more score work for plenty of other gritty Westerns in the future, though again that’s for us to know and for you to find out. Then we’ll get Mute to release your soundtrack as a standalone album. Who knows, maybe the vinyl will be a nice colour. Waddayasay?’

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus

Ah, the unlucky thirteenth record. Always a hard one to make, although not so for Nick Cave, who chews up superstition and then spits it onto the ground and maybe writes a song about how pathetic it all is. 'Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus' is a knotty double record that takes on two different drummers for each side and was written over twelve days of presumably morose and terse recording -- that's how it sounds, anyway.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Push The Sky Away

You've heard him repeatedly on Peaky Blinders so if you haven't already caught up with Nick Cave's sixteen or so studio albums with his Bad Seeds then there's no time like the present. Push the Sky Away was his 2013 album which showed that time had withered none of his songwriting and arrangement skills. It's a slow moving record of stripped down songs and heartfelt paeans somewhat at odds perhaps with the more brutal landscapes of his records earlier in the decade but showcasing the more introspective side of his oeuvre.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Ghosteen

Ghosteen is the new album from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, the first since the heart-breaking Skeleton Tree in 2016. Recorded in Brighton, Los Angeles and Berlin, Cave says of the album that the songs on the first record are children and the songs on the second record are the parents. It seems he’s thought about it, anyway.

Let Love In

More reissue goodness from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds; this time it's the rather sweetly titled Let Love In, to which we ask Nick: what's the catch? The catch is of course that this is as ever a dark collection of cuts about loneliness and romantic insecurity (just look at those titles: "Do You Love Me?"; "Nobody's Baby Now"; Lay Me Low"). Somebody make a time machine and go back and hug the 1994 Nick Cave.

Kings (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Kings (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis further cements their place as top-of-the-list score writers. The film itself is set in Los Angeles in 1992 directed by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, with whom Warren Ellis has worked before, and stars Halle Berry. Nick Cave and Warren Ellis perfectly capture the tension of the most emotionally volatile time in the city’s history.

Loin Des Hommes (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

On CD or Gatefold Vinyl from Goliath Entertainment. Nick Cave and Warren Ellis (Bad Seeds, Dirty Three, Grinderman) have quite the track record for serene desolate soundtracks. With eight already under the belt previous epics include The Road and The Assassination of Jesse James. The Loin Des Hommes OST stands closer to their work on The Proposition. Bare and emotive strings section with electronic elements.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis
Wind River (Original Score)

The score to the lyrical new thriller Wind River, created by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis with a beautiful suite of film soundtrack music. The film was directed by Taylor Sheridan and stars Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner. Cave and Ellis crafted a kind of ghost score from natural elements: the unending wind, punctuated by the sad but peaceful silence of snow. Expect whispers to rising choirs and electronic throbs. CD on Invada / Lakeshore.

War Machine (Original Score)

You don’t need me to tell you how much of a winner this is going to be. Nick Cave & Warren Ellis, soundtrack scorers to countless high-profile films, have done the appropriate here. The new Netflix film ‘War Machine’ starring Brad Pitt and Tilda Swinton has been given the full eerie synth and strings treatment, like on ‘Skeleton Tree’ or the ‘Hell Or High Water’ score. They promise dark and light in equal measure. Of course they do. CD on Invada.

Well look here the first ever career spanning collection of the music of Sir Nick Cave all the way from his debut 'From Her To Eternity' to date. Handpicked by Cave himself along with Mick Harvey and other Bad Seeds, the lads have even raided their archives for rare unseen photos and memorabilia for the book that comes with the limited edition ‘Super Deluxe’ version which also comes with a two hour DVD.  Four formats to choose from depending on your level of obsession with the man and his work.

One More Time With Feeling

Director Andrew Dominik (Chopper, The Assassination of Jesse James…) documents the making of and the fallout that created The Skeleton Tree, the latest album by Nick Cave And The Badseeds. Filmed in Black and White, Colour and 3D, Once More… is deeply personal piece that reflects the anguish of the incomprehensible happening. Includes 3 short films by the director.

Skeleton Tree

The subject of a much-anticipated forthcoming documentary by Andrew Dominik, 'Skeleton Tree' is the latest offering from much-revered Aussie dark overlord Nick Cave and his inimitable Black Seeds. Hot on the heels of 2013's critically acclaimed 'Push the Sky Away', this new work will no doubt delight Cave's many admirers. Released the day after the film, the mood of the record will no doubt touch on its themes.

Mars (Original Series Soundtrack)

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis go to space! Mars is the latest screen project to benefit from the pair’s sensitive original scoring; they also contributed the series’ theme song, which involves Cave’s vocals. These two have worked together so many times in so many contexts, they can probably produce high-calibre soundtrack work like this in their sleep. Excellent as ever. The Mars soundtrack is released on Milan.

Grinderman
Grinderman

If Nick Cave didn't have enough to in 2007 dealing with his Bad Seeds he set up Grinderman as a more rock orientated project to explore once again the murky scuzz racket of his earlier band the Birthday Party. The first fruits of the project was this self titled debut which also featured Cave's long term right hand man Warren Ellis (the Dirty Three). The result was a raw and primal offering, sonically at odds with the more gentle yearning of his Bad Seeds work.

Live From KCRW

If you can't get enough of Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds then as well as all the studio albums you have to choose from, there's four live albums. The latest of which is Live From KCRW  - a stripped back performance featuring classic material as well as songs from his album at the time Push the Sky Away. With classic Bad Seeds Warren Ellis and Barry Adamson in attendance, this is an intimate reading of some of his best work.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!

'Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!' is Nick Cave's attempt at making a bona fide garage rock record, one that's rough around the edges to match the snarl in the singer's voice and the sewage in his songwriting. It's a coarser, heavier affair than normal, and also signals the end of founder Mick Harvey's tenure with the band.

Music From The Motion Picture - The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford

Yeeeee-haw! Those old cowboys Nick Cave & Warren Ellis roll into town, pistols cocked and boots spurred, with their music for Andrew Dominick’s 2007 flick The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. This was only the pair’s second scoring job (they’ve since done a fair few more), but you wouldn’t know it by the confident, grand music here. Their Southern Gothic chamber schtick is highly evocative.

The Road (Original Film Score)

The Road is a film of the brilliant book by Cormac McCarthy. It details a father and son’s struggle for survival following an ambiguous, devastating event. Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have written and performed the score which captures this struggle and the bleak post-apocalyptic landscape perfectly. Available on vinyl for the first time.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Nocturama

Post-punk only comes out at Halloween, so how about another Nick Cave reissue, since 'tis the season, and all that? Released just over a decade ago, 'Nocturama' was the twelfth Bad Seeds release, although Cave still hadn't gotten over having awkwardly cropped photos of his face on the front cover at this point. It cemented his place as one of the great narrative songwriters in music and it also saw the band wave a fond farewell to Seeds' founding member Blixa Bargeld.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Your Funeral... My Trial

Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds released their fourth record, the melancholy and grieving 'Your Funeral... My Trial' in 1986. Its traditional rock ethic only contributed to its woeful abandon: the piano and organ is dominant, creating a pantomimic sound, while Cave is in fine form, invoking Gothic and unsettling arrangements, such as the spectral guitars on "Stranger Than Kindness".

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Tender Prey

If you were only ever to own one Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds album, 1988’s ‘Tender Prey’ might be the one to get. It has ‘The Mercy Seat’ on it, the defining statement of his early career and a peerless piece of modern songcraft; songs like ‘Deanna’ and ‘City Of Refuge’ are perhaps the finest examples of the deranged Elvis-preacher shtick Cave was on in the late 80s; with hindsight we can now see ‘Watching Alice’ as the first flush of the more abstract and impressionist style of songwriting Cave et al have been serving up in recent years. The record also kick-started a decade-long run in which Cave made classic album after classic album. Essential copage.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
The Boatman's Call

Originally released in 1997, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ album The Boatman’s Call was a move toward the more gracefully melancholic from the gloomy Antipodean from the previous Murder Ballads, with his most personal album to date. A classic for anyone who doesn't own it yet, and Nick Cave’s most critically acclaimed work.

Murder Ballads

Nick Cave and his perpetual gloomy face released Murder Ballads back in 1996 with the Bad Seeds to great critical acclaim and even commercial success. To his dismay, he was even nominated for MTV Best Male Artist of the Year, although he was withdrawn at his own behest. Also featuring Kylie Minogue, PJ Harvey and Shane Macgowan, this release also boasts four bonus tracks and four videos. CD on Mute.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
From Her To Eternity

'From Her To Eternity' was the debut record for Cave in his olden days as an ex-member of the post-punk meanies the Birthday Party and the founder of the Bad Seeds. Based around his own song-writing and contributions from co-founder Mick Harvey (who sadly didn't get his own nameplate), the record saw Cave focusing on lyricism and moments of musical reflection that weren't seen in the forthright and cruel punk attacks of the Birthday Party.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
The First Born Is Dead

The second record from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, back when they were working out how to reign in their creepy brand of blues rock. Recorded in Berlin in order for Cave's left-field inclinations to be taken seriously, rather than regarded with scorn, it features song-writing contributions from both Cave and his collaborator Mick Harvey, as well as a cover of "Wanted Man" by Dylan and Cash.

No More Shall We Part

Four years of silence after The Boatman's Call could have left fans of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds a little disgruntled but then he brought out No More Shall We Part and frankly, he knocked everyone’s socks off yet again. Haunting, beautiful, at times crushingly sad, at others, wryly amused by the ridiculousness of life. A masterpiece on CD and DVD from Mute.
