Malcolm Middleton
You & I

A taster for his forthcoming 'Summer of '13' record this 7" contains three new tracks from the former Arab Strap bloke with his cheeky brand of Scottish pop. On Nude. I had no idea that label was still going. You learn something every single day including how to flub your way to a word limit.

5:14 Fluoxytine Seagull Alcohol John Nicotine

2002’s 5:14 Fluoxytine Seagull Alcohol John Nicotine saw Arab Strap mainstay Malcolm Middleton step out as an artist on his own terms. Middleton has subsequently perked up over the course of a long and fruitful run of solo records, but 5:14 Fluoxytine Seagull Alcohol John Nicotine is an album as wracked and self-examining as anything made by Middleton’s heroes Smog and Will Oldham. This new Chemikal Underground pressing comes souped-up with a bunch of rarities and demoes.

Arab Strap
Arab Strap

Look at them there on the sleeve. They look a lot older than that now and to the delight of their fans have reformed for a few shows this October. To tie in with this comes this compilation of some of their best bits as well as rarities and B sides etc.  Arab Strap were always a lot more than their pished up image suggested with lots of gorgeous music backing Aidan Moffatt's slurred tales.

Summer of '13

The ex-Arab Strap songwriter Malcolm Middleton returns with his first solo album in seven years. Summer of ‘13 sees his dark and witty lyrics set to synths and strings as Middleton pays homage to Glasgow’s underground dance culture. This is a collection of bold, romantic and utterly unique songs from a low-key icon.

Malcolm Middleton and David Shrigley
Music and Words

Music plus words usually equals a song, but that's not really what Malcolm Middleton and David Shrigley are doing here. This collaboration is made from the sardonic and extremely sweary prose of Shrigley -- who writes about things like rabbits having a civil war and telling each other to fuck off a lot -- and a deliberately offbeat soundtrack from Middleton, who plays a sad, introspective sort of post-rock that totally misreads the tone of these stories. Each story is read aloud by a different comic performer. The word "fuck" is bleeped out. A lot. I ask you, is this the Sleaford Mods?

Arab Strap
Philophobia

Rarely have musicians managed to combine being horny and being sad quite so effectively. 'Philophobia' is the second album from Arab Strap who have since gone on to become Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton, and saw them explore the limits of love, lust and relationships. It is at times almost too confessional.
