Gareth Davis & Machinefabriek
Lucier: Memory Space

Inspired by Sonic Arts Union legend Alvin Lucier (one of the American founding fathers of electro-acoustic music, concrete experiments and pioneering advances in field of sound-art/installation) GD and Machinefabriek have delivered a remarkable album here that is firmly rooted in the organic, eccentric and unfathomable world of electro...view item »

Rutger Zuydervelt
Astroneer - Volume 2

Machinefabriek man Rutger Zuydervelt self-releases his second volume of music from the soundtrack to the game Astroneer - Volume 2; following hot on the heels of Volume 1, logically enough. The music plays continuously during the game and reacts to gameplay, actions and events. Soft, spacey sounds for generati...view item »

Aaron Martin & Machinefabriek

After their Cello Recycling / Cello Drowning collaboration for Type in 2007, always-on microsound sculptor Machinefabriek (Rutger Zuydervelt) and reputable ambient cellist Aaron Martin next joined forces in 2012, scoring a dance piece for Ivan Peréz. Here are the fruits of that commission, with l...view item »

Banabila & Machinefabriek
Banabila & Machinefabriek

I have here a CD by a man whose music I have heard, Machinefabriek aka Rutger Zuydervelt, and a man whose name is not familiar to me at all, Michel Banabila (although further investigation reveals he’s made loads of records and reveals me for what ...view item »

Rutger Zuydervelt

Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek) gets all playful, finally venturing into video-game 'tracking on 'Astroneer'; summat we at NR didn't dare dream would happen. The game lets you reshape terrain like Play-Doh. Mmm. The music's bendy, squishy and spacey to match the theme. Self published CD, limite...view item »

Hark! News of Machinefabriek's longform, sculpted sonic drama 'Crumble' reaches us. Anne Bakker and Edita Karkoschka alternately swoop and swoon with violin and soothing voice respectively, over Rutger Zuydervelt's often glitchy, sometimes abrasive electronics and field recordings. On a...view item »

Machinefabriek with Anne Bakker

Machinefabriek seems to have been listening to some Iannis Xenakis (as should everyone)! This new mini-album finds him moving away from his usual style, commissioning violinist Anne Bakker to perform a series of single-string glissandi, multiple recordings of which are layered up ...view item »

Machinefabriek/ Nils Frahm

Celebrating the video release of 'Daux', Dekorder records have decided on a cheeky 7" single release of 'Daux' the titled track composed by Machinefabriek and originally available on the long playing record (you guessed it...) Stroomtoon II

Yo yo yo. It’s about a thousand years since I last did a review cos I’ve just not had the time but I’m gonna try and shoehorn a couple in each week from now on so prepare to be blown away once more by my usual mediocre standard of writing and generally poor music critique. Stillness Soundtracks

This is a cd release on Glacial Pace collecting scores from a series of short films by Esther Kokmiejer. A natural fit for Machinefabriek and his evocative neo-classical soundscapes, the pieces act as a form of “abstract storytelling” for the footage. They stand alone as rich and mov...view item »

Halfslaap II / Stiltetonen

At 55 minutes long and containing just the two tracks this is one for the long haul. The kind of electronic minimalism peddled by the likes of Machinefabriek always benefits from an injection of human warmth and the opening piece ‘Halfslaap II’ introduces some quite wonderful viola playing which is the making of it. Opening w...view item »

Chris Dooks and Machinefabriek
The Eskdalemuir Harmonium

Sound artists Chris Dooks and Machinefabriek lock horns on this LP, on which they celebrate all things harmonium, in particular a decaying one in Scotland which lends the album its title. It’s a soothing kind of neo-concrete full of creaks and clacks and wheezes and drones, which are sometimes complet...view item »

A limited 10” from the prolific and always good value electronic maestro, Machinefabriek. Our man Zuydervelt performs alchemy with cheap synth presets here on Vergezicht 1 & 2, tracks then brought to life with sax, piano and voice. Conceptually similar to some of Daniel Lopatin...view item »

Stroomtoon translates into ‘the sound of electricity’. Recorded some looper pedals and an analogue tone generator, the crackle and static alongside the sines of the generator and the field recordings make a layer, textured and eerie ambient record. By Rutger Zuydervelt and Korg Monotron as Machinefabriek, mastered by...view item »

Steve Roden / Machinefabriek

I don't find ambient music/sound art all that easy to write about at the best of times (it's peaceful, not much happens, there's soothing tones and field recordings, I get it already), and it's even more obtuse when you're listening to sounds which have been created for art installations ...view item »

Colour Tones

What does the colour Green sound like? Machinefabriek attempts to answer that question, then asks the same of Red, Grey, Blue, Brown, Mosaic (?) on another alluring release, this time on Fang Bomb. Is it possible to evoke colour in pure sound? Hide the track titles from you friends and ask what they see to these...view item »

Ontrafelde Tonen

You know what, this might actually be my favourite Machinefabriek thing I've heard to date, but before I get started on the music I'll talk you through the concept and packaging, because both are totally sweet. Library Tapes, Machinefabriek, Various

Here's a superfly CD called Borghesia. I think it's limited to 100 copies in total and it features exclusive tracks by Library Tapes, Machinefabriek, Fabio Orsi and Die Stadt der Romantische Punks. The Library Tapes track is nothing sort of breathtaking.....a beautiful electronic neo-classical stringy throbby thing which oozes passion and emotion. ...view item »

This is a little known fact but for every tree cut down in our precious rainforest's a new Machinefabriek CD is born. In-fact, for every breath I take a new Machinefabriek CD is born. I'm being flippant but you get the picture - Machinefabriek (Rutger Zuydervelt) makes a lot of CD's. This one (entitled 'Brokstukken') was also released...view item »

Tim Catlin & Machinefabriek

This is the second collaboration between Rutger Zuydervelt and this Australian guitarist and sound artist. The creation involved prepared guitar and sitar from Catlin given over to Machinefabriek who draws out extended tones and drones adding additional sounds and overdubs. The result is really subdued and hypnotic. The second part 'Patina II' h...view item »

Birds In A Box

Oooh, this sounds like me on my train ride home munching and crunching away on Wasabi Peas as I stuff them in to breaking gob capacity and my nose burns and my eyes water. Peter Broderick & Machinefabriek
Mort Aux Vaches

How have here in my sweaty, deranged paw, a "collab" betwixt that sound-tinkering Dutchman & the classically-inclined Swede. It's in three parts, involves a great deal of restrained guitar feedback, reverb, static, crackle, vast acoustic space, moody violin & one of the guests, Nils Frahm, hitting his piano. With his lady fingers. On the...view item »

You really need to listen to Machinefabriek with headphones. In a pokey office with a coupla small speakers in it really doesn't work. But stick on some headphones and suddenly it makes a bit more sense. Duotoon is constructed using just sine waves so it's a wee bit different to his other releases. The tones shift from speaker to speaker which a...view item »

I love this album. The eeriness and sparseness add to its overall charm. The tracks have a way of drawing the listener in, and in moments stir a combined sense of timelessness and unease. I'm a dance choreographer and the music from this album works perfectly for something I'm working on at the moment. An excellent album for anyone into electron...view item »

It never ceases to amaze me how prolific Rutger Zuydervelt is and yet the quality of his work is always super high quality. Joining the artist here are Richard Skelton along with Greg Haines and Anne Baker. Here Zuydervelt is in fine form creating nostalgic ambience full of grain and crackle. It sort of feels like a lost archive that's been degr...view item »

Das Machinefabriek is back with another self released job. This one is hand numbered of 100 copies in a a kind of mock envelope and I have to say it looks very nice. It starts off all spacey with some goon from Nasa or somewhere or other banging on about space things (like they do) before it creeps into more familiar Machinefabriek territory. It...view item »

Machinefabriek & Andrea Belfi
Pulses & Places

This CD I've set to LOUD through the headphones so I can hear what's occurring. Opening with a hollow sounding snare tattoo & some drifty guitar textures 'n' glitch, this is set to be a rather cerebral improvised performance. An exercise in electro-acoustics & scintillating atmospherics, the four tracks here employ the tremulous ...view item »

Freiband & Machinefabriek

The ever prolific Machinefabriek has a new album out. This one is a collaboration with Freiband (Frans De Waard) on Gareth Hardwick's Low Point label. It's called 'Oahu' and it's an interesting beast. It starts off with a short 90 second segement of improvised lapsteel which is all bluesy and that. Then you get 2 tracks of delicious atmospherics, d...view item »

This sounds like a gorgeous piece. Originally intended as a one minute soundtrack for a video poem, it has been expanded to a 17 minute movement that employs a twinkly, shimmering music box style sound. This is, to my ears, one of Mr Fabriek's most sublime efforts that takes the form of a fragile chamber ambient piece over being a piece of perpl...view item »

Peter Broderick & Machinefabriek
Blank Grey Canvas Sky

Now then, now then. Another exciting collaboration is in our midst. I'm holding a CD on Fang Bomb that comes in a lovely new designer digipak and the artists are Peter Broderick & Machinefabriek so if that doesn't juice your sack of oranges right up, you're nothing but a grumply ol' husk y' hear? As you can imagine, from the off, Peter's minimalist...view item »

Ithaca Trio & Machinefabriek
Par Avion

Judging by the front of this A5 sized fun sized package it seems local Leeds lads The Ithaca Trio (previous release on Under The Spire) approached Machinefabriek to see if ole Rutger was interested in doing some sort of collaboration. I reckon he was as it's here and he's made the artwork. Funtimes! You get 4 tracks by The Ithaca Trio who seem t...view item »

The Hilary Jeffery Tape

This is a two track collaboration with trombonist Hilary Jeffery who is a member of the excellent Kilimanjaro Dark Jazz Orchestra who have had releases on Planet Mu and Adnoiseam. This is an exercise in reduced and melancholic jazz forms where Machinefabriek really allows the trombone to breathe. I'm guessing the process involved the recording a...view item »

Machinefabriek & Freiband

2 very prolific artists come together for a collaborative effort of Frans De Waard's My Own Little Label. In case you didn't know Freiband is Frans and I've just clocked an amazing photo of him on discogs smoking a pipe and it looks like his head is smoking. This is an intense piece of work. It's harsher sounding than other Machinefabriek...view item »

Machinefabriek has a rather swish looking 7" out on new label Eat, Sleep, Repeat. 'Slovensko' sounds like our man Rutger is walking across town during a trip to Slovakia with a recording device picking up all sorts of sounds around him, you can hear traffic, at one point it sounds like he's passing a construction site, possibly some train soun...view item »

Machinefabriek has a batch of 3" CD's available, of which I'm listening to Nerf. 'Sluimer' clocks in at just over twelve and a half minutes and is a spacious almost dry piece constructed from acoustic and electric guitars, that have been recorded and edited by the artist. A fairly simple but effective track which is followed by 'Ax' which is h...view item »

Tim Catlin & Machinefabriek

Machinefabriek is a very prolific chap. I've lost count of how many releases he's had out but let's just say it's quite a lot.
