Lloyd Cole
Guesswork

Consisting of fewer, longer songs and minimal lyrics, Lloyd Cole’s 11th solo album sees the indie legends face up to the inevitability and uncertainty of ageing. Guesswork, as opposed to his last outing Standards six years ago, also embraces electronic textures, adding up to one of the most profound records he’s ever released.

1D Electronics 2012-2014

1D Electronics 2012 - 2014 is the first solo release of Lloyd Cole’s electronic dabblings. We’ve heard plenty from him in pop mode, and some of his electronics alongside Hans-Joachim Roedelius, but this is the first record of this kind. Each piece is studiously sequenced, moving through subtle modulations as they flourish. On Bureau B.

Selected Studies Vol 1

Bureau B (James Last, La Düsseldorf) release this unexpected collaborative record. Lloyd Cole (he of the ‘80s) and  Hans-Joachim Roedelius (he of Germany) never actually met in the production of Selected Studies Vol 1, choosing instead to bounce files back and forth via email. As such, it’s surprising that there is so much warmth and nuance to the tracks here. These lovely little machine curios draw from Opal, Boards Of Canada, Claude Debussy and Holger Czukay.

Broken Record

Remember Lloyd Cole? Relatively big in the '80s and ‘90s, used to play with The Commotions? Yeah, well he’s back with a new solo LP. Broken Record is the first album Cole has made in about a decade, but the tunes here show that he’s not lost his touch in the intervening years. Backed by a band that includes Fred Maher and Joan Wasser, Cole comes through with a set of stately acoustic-rock jangles on Broken Record that are part-way between Badly Drawn Boy and Eels.
