Natural Causes is the new album by Detroit native, ‘60s obsessive, former record store employee and prolific songwriter, Kelley Stoltz. The press release is trying to tell us that this sounds like a cross between The Teardrop Explodes and The Kinks. It’s perfectly plausible given Stoltz ear for a tune. LP & CD on Banana & Louie.
Remember the Beatles? Kelly Stoltz has done on previous albums but here he dips into other forms of anglophile music with nods to Pulp, Fleetwood Mac (they were kinda English) and the Cleaners From Venus. Quality power pop from a man who deserves to be known more than just being the Dwight Twilley of his generation.
Kelly Stoltz has a slick hand for off-key indie pop, throwing out busily layered, craftily written, joyously performed numbers like it ain’t no thing. In Triangle Time he increases the synth quotient, but still keeps things close to the ground. Twelve fun tracks, out on John Dwyer’s energetic Castle Face label.
Kelly Stoltz has a whole full-length album coming out soon, but he recorded so much in the sessions for it that he just can’t stop himself releasing some more. The lo-fi pop on 4 New Cuts is pretty luxuriously presented, coming as a double 7” set in a mini-gatefold sleeve; splattered vinyl at that. Released by Stroll On.
From Detroit to San Francisco Kelley Stoltz a.k.a Willie Weird pushes his simple ideas through a lo-fi effects-laden filter to growing acclaim. The Scuzzy Inputs Of… is the result of an evident Beach Boys fetish - full of shimmering 60’s West Coast sensibilities and retro quirk. Out on vinyl LP from Stroll On.
