Angelo Badalamenti Vinyl, CD & tapes by Angelo Badalamenti at Norman Records
Yes, Angelo Badalamenti is famous for a certain sound and a certain soundtrack to a very well-known early 90s TV show -- but there is more to him, much more than that. ‘Badalamenti’ -- it just rolls off the tongue so easily, doesn’t it -- is the definition of smooth-yet-eerie. Hmm... Smoothly eerie / eerily smooth atmospheres. Obviously there’s no getting away from the clear, stone-cold fact that Badalamenti’s singular, era-defining (and genre-shaping) work is, of course, the music he composed for Twin Peaks. (Now available, by the way, in freshly remastered, 180-gram 'Damn Fine Coffee' coloured vinyl). That music naturally included the show's lovelorn theme; 'Falling', so ethereally and delicately voiced by Julee Cruise.
Before all that malarkey, however, he was known to literally hundreds of thousands of Generation-X-ers for the soundtrack to David Lynch's other real masterpiece of movie magic, 'Blue Velvet'. Wherein AB perfectly captures and orchestrates the seedy-yet-stylish '80s noir sound that Lynch so craved for his own creative vision, and which the duo masterfully made their own. The Lynch-Badalamenti love affair continued and the fruit of their co-mingling creative juices was the Twin Peaks spinoff movie 'Fire Walk With Me'. With variations upon the series' main themes further explored, in addition there was new music -- with the return of Julee Cruise to the happy family. Get it now, while it's still available on a lovingly, lavishly produced and remastered 180-gram 'Cherry Pie' coloured vinyl LP, in a stunning gatefold sleeve. Or, if you, prefer, on a black vinyl LP or CD.
Then there is the very fine recent redux of the TV series, the soundtracks to which required nothing less than the combined artistic merits (now standard) of Lynch and Badalamenti. The music is up to the usual level of quality it would be reasonable to expect. Series Two was hated by Lynch -- he was cruelly waved away, nay discarded, binned by the TV exec fat-cats -- but this didn't stop the music being up to its benchmark excellence. The duo roll on now as Thought Gang, but more on that little venture later (and in its correct place).
