Half Japanese
Charmed Life

Charmed Life is the 6th album by Half Japanese. It was originally released in 1988. The band’s leader, Jad Fair, is known for his weird take on music, mixing lop-sided, lo-fi indie rock with strange-yet-heartfelt lyrics. Here, he does it over a mere 31 songs. The album also features US indie legend Don Fleming on guitar.

Half Japanese
Invincible

....And they are invincible aren't they? Jad and David Fair have long been proponents of outsider music but now in 2019 they sound rather steady and listenable if it weren't for Jad's screechy freeform vocals which continue to give the band an air of unpredictability in the best traditions of Daniel Johnston and Jonathan Richman.

Half Japanese
Why Not?

Why Not? is the latest instalment of twisted shambolic indie-pop from Jad Fair’s Half Japanese. Over a 42 year career the band have made 16 studio albums that will make you laugh, cry, dance, shout and whatever else you feel like doing. Album #17, Why Not? is no exception. Vinyl LP and CD, and if you’re quick enough, you might get a copy of the limited edition indies only white vinyl version!

Half Japanese
Half Gentlemen / Not Beasts

The very first record from the Fair brothers’ cult band Half Japanese. Half Japanese are notable for a number of reasons, one of which is making their debut a triple album! This set captures the whole thing, as well as another CD of bonus tracks. They are also notable for their refusal to play (or tune) their guitars properly, as you’ll hear (note that this is a good thing).

Jad Fair, Tenniscoats and Norman Blake
Raindrops

What a team-up: Jad Fair of Half Japanese plus the wonderful Tenniscoats, as well as Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub. With this personnel, Raindrops could hardly fail to be one the most playful and odd records of the year, and it does not disappoint! Lovely pop music from way outside, served up as a double LP on the Joyful Noise label.

Jad Fair & Kramer
The History Of Crying

Jad Fair, half of Half Japanese and a regular collaborator with plenty of other acts (Daniel Johnston! The Pastels) here teams up with Kramer, the mysterious and legendary producer / label-runner who worked with Galaxie 500 to name but one band. The History Of Crying is an album of surprising songs, with special guest guitar solo appearances from Paul Leary of Butthole Surfers! LP on Shimmy 500.

Half Japanese
Hear The Lions Roar

Everyone either does or should love Half Japanese, the expression of a brotherly love for weirdo rock music to be played with no regard for conventional technique. Hear The Lions Roar is their brand new record: it's as fun as ever, and apparently features many of the musicians who worked with the band in the 90’s for maximum good old times. CD and vinyl (black or lilac) editions on Fire.

Jad Fair & Norman Blake
Yes

Jad Fair and Norman Blake last worked together in 2003 on the Jad Fair & Teenage Fanclub album, Words Of Wisdom And Hope. Musically, Yes is more in the vein of Teenage Fanclub’s hook-laden guitar pop than the jarring stabs of Half Japanese, but Jad Fair’s very own vocal stylings and lyrical craziness remain intact. A marriage made in heaven.

Yuri Landman Ensemble (featuring Jad Fair & Philippe Petit)
That's Right, Go Cats

What a collection of interesting characters on this release! Yuri Landman is a maker of experimental electric stringed instruments, Jad Fair is in Half Japanese, and Philippe Petit is a turntable-utilising sound artist. That’s Right, Go Cats captures the ensemble performing with some of Landman’s creations: pretty sweet.
