Andrew Bird / Nora O'Connor / Robbie Fulks
Extremely limited 7” vinyl from Bloodshot Records. Celebrating 20 years in existence, the label has Andrew Bird and Nora O’Connor covering a Robbie Fulks song and then Robbie returning the favour. It’s a pretty perfect summation of the ferocious alt-country the label trades in. The violin arrangements and male/female vocals are lovely, plus there’s only 1000 copies worldwide.
Echolocations: River is the second installment of a series of recordings by Andrew Bird that were recorded at a specific location. This time, under the Hyperion Bridge in Atwater Village, Los Angeles was the chosen site, which was though to have interesting acoustic properties. The album contains eight instrumental pieces inspired by the recording location. As with its predecessor, Echolocations: Canyon, Echolocations: River has a companion film made by Tyler Manson. LP and CD on Wegawam.
The Mysterious Production of Eggs was the third solo album emitted by Andrew Bird, originally seeing the light of day in 2005. The talented violin-looper works indie-folk magic here, bringing a light and playful touch to his songwriting. Some very fine classic-Bird whistling here too. Reissued on Bird’s very own label, Wegawam.
Andrew Bird is one of those reasonably popular singer songwriter types who just sits under most peoples radar. Maybe all this will change with this new record which has been scrubbed a little more than previous discs for potential mass appeal. Expect stories in song and dusty Americana that is not afraid of being rootsy.
