The billionth posthumous J Dilla release is also a celebration of his early group Slum Village. Their LP Fantastic, Volume 2 was actually released at the turn of the Millennium, but since recording was completed in 1998 this year marks a twentieth anniversary for the record. The Lost Scrolls 2 (Slum Village Edition) presents previously unreleased bootlegs, remixes, solo tracks and demos cut by Dee, Baatin and T3 during the Fantastic sessions. They are all, of course, the crispest of jams from the neo-soul/hip-hop nexus.
The late J Dilla recently had his cult classic Ruff Draft EP reissued by Pay Jay as a new edition that foregrounded the mixes he preferred, but never released. Now those new versions are available sans vox on this instrumental record. Of course, they are impeccable beats - this is Jay Dee we’re talking about after all.
Just when one gets to thinking that the annals of J Dilla’s discography couldn’t be combed any more, we get another posthumous release from the MPC grandmaster. This one’s a souped-up re-rendering of his cult classic Ruff Draft EP from back in 2003. It features new mixes of the original track list as well as bonus tracks, alternative takes and some illuminating liner notes. On the 2xvinyl release you get the original LP on one wax, the producer's alternative takes on the other.

Fresh from appearing in my dream last night here's the latest offering from the late beat maker and hip-hop production genius. This is a selection of recordings he made using his Akai MPC sampler. The device he used has now been donated to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture so this is also a historical artefact as well as being further examples of the excellent instrumental hip-hop he created.

Despite his sad passing some years ago, J Dilla’s beats still sound fresh and full of life, and listeners are still discovering the majesty of his catalogue.
