Billy Nomates Vinyl, CD & tapes by Billy Nomates at Norman Records
Billy Nomates comes from a long and noble line of artists who channel the visceral immediacy of punk into impassioned soliloquies. Billy Bragg, Mark E. Smith, Patti Smith and Sleaford Mods are just a few of those who spring to mind when you listen to Billy Nomates’ records - a comparison that holds not just in her driving instrumentals, which often augment the Sleaford Mods bass/drums combo with keyboard flourishes, but also in the way that many of her songs hinge on a declamatory Sprechgesang vocal style.
There’s also an age-old punk fire in Billy Nomates’ lyrical content, albeit one that comes channelled through the very specific experiences of someone trying to make ends meet in austerity Britain. On her eponymous 2020 debut LP the one born Tor Maries rails with eloquence against everything from Brexit-style ‘good old days’ nostalgia to the grind of life at the bottom of the gig economy food chain. However, hers is also music of great personal strength, strength which she passes on to the listener - to use a great quotation of hers from an interview she gave to the NME, ‘in a world of yes men, I’ll be a no woman’. Billy Nomates makes music which decries a poor world while simultaneously reaching out for a better one.
