Porridge Radio Vinyl, CD & tapes by Porridge Radio at Norman Records
Porridge Radio. Is that a thing? Like, is “porridge radio” an expression of some sort, ala “horses for courses” or “c’est la vie”? Or is it just a couple of cool-sounding words jammed together to make a band name? I suppose you’d have to ask project mastermind Dana Margolin about the origins of the phrase - if “porridge radio” is indeed a saying, then it’s certainly not one that we use around these parts.
Whatever it means (or doesn’t mean), recent years have seen Porridge Radio become shorthand for “extremely good indie band”. Initially it started out as Margolin's solo project, but at some point in the mid-/late-2010s Porridge Radio became a multi-member affair. They spent several years building a rep on the UK’s twee-punk circuit - a couple of records for Memorials Of Distinction (O. Chapman, JPEGMAFIA) caught the attention of Secretly Canadian, who snapped up Porridge Radio for their breakout 2020 LP ‘Every Bad’. Margolin is the star turn, her natural charisma giving extra energy to her impassioned and heartfelt lyrics, but the rest of Porridge Radio - keyboardist Georgie Stott, bass guitarist Maddie Ryall and drummer Sam Yardley - help to bring Margolin’s “slacker-indie” songwriting style to life.
