Higher Plane Breeze

Ofege are a psychedelic funk rock band from Lagos, Nigeria. They came together as teenagers in the early ‘70s and in between their studies, made a few records. They were inspired by Santana, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and African bands such as BLO, The Funkees and Ofo The Black Company. Higher Plane Breeze was their third album, originally released in 1977, and is definitely a jewel in their oeuvre.

The Last Of The Origins

Nigerian rockers Ofege get another of their classic LPs reissued on Tidal Waves Music. 1976’s The Last Of The Origins built on the success of their debut album Try And Love, fusing psych-rock grooves with Lagos funk fire in a manner reminiscent of their heroes BLO and The Funkees. This one’s been pretty rare up until now - indeed, this is the first time the record has been put on wax since the ‘70s.

Try And Love

Largely neglected in the wave of Lagos Funk and Afrobeat reissues of the past decade, Ofege now get their dues with a reissue courtesy of Tidal Waves Music. Recorded when the group were still in high school, Try And Love went on to sell loads of copies when it first came out in 1973. Ofege’s brand of Nigerian boogie-rock is closest in style to the more blues-influenced groups like Monomono and BLO.
