The Ethiopians
Engine 54

Probably one of the greatest train-themed reggae and rocksteady albums ever made, its Engine 54 by The Ethiopians, initially released in 1968. The first thing that floors you is the beautiful falsetto harmonies of the group’s voices, and then the rich rhythm section, the finely-deployed horns, and the occasional train recordings all come in and seal the deal. Reissued by Music On Vinyl in collaboration with Trojan.

The Ethiopians
Woman Capture Man

Originally released in 1970, Woman Capture Man by The Ethiopians came at a time when the sound of reggae was changing to a slower, smoother groove. The band, who were among Jamaica’s most popular then, made an album of sweet songs with their harmonious vocals up front in the mix. This is the sound of a band in motion, a band that refused to settle.
