Reasons To Dream

Do people need Reasons To Dream though? Isn’t dreaming, by its very nature, an escape from reason? Whatever. Anyway, whenyoung are a newish band who claim to be ‘London’s premier indie songsmiths’. Them’s big words, but on Reasons To Dream (leave it…) the trio do a pretty good New Order/Echo & The Bunnymen/other prominent post-punk group impression, so maybe they are.

Irish indie trio whenyoung release their single Actor on red vinyl, with B-side Silverchair, after some buzz around their live appearances. Reflecting their name, the track is an exploration of the fun and fears of youth. Indie niceness. Red 7” on Hate Hate Hate (Fat White Family and The Wytches).

Given Up EP

There once was a band called Whenyoung / Who left Limerick for London / With Cranberries covers and numerous others / They’ve now quite a reputation! With apologies to Whenyoung and the people of Limerick in general. The trio’s new single ‘Given Up’ goes for snappy and poignant alt-radio-rock with a winning chorus.

Pretty Pure

Whenyoung, do as the young do. The fledgling Irish group debut on Yala! Records, which is run by Felix White (from The Maccabees, come on). Both tracks here are heart-on-sleeve indie-rock that, to be honest, sounds like loads of other bands who are doing that 90s indie/grunge revival thing at the moment. But the songwriting is good, and the singer’s sparky energy and slightly shrill delivery recall The Sugarcubes, which is always a good thing.
