Guided By Voices Vinyl, CD & tapes by Guided By Voices at Norman Records

I’d imagine you’re aware of them, given that they have a new record plastered over our front-page every other fortnight, but just in case: Guided by Voices is Robert Pollard’s idiosyncratic pet project, once full of smart songwriter buckos like...read more »

Guided By Voices
Surrender Your Poppy Field

Coming off the back of his 100-song marathon set on NYE in Los Angeles, Robert Pollard certainly doesn’t intend on slowing down in the new decade. Surrender Your Poppy Field is the 30th (thirtieth!!) Guided By Voices album, and something like the 105th Pollard has released overall. Phew. Furthermore, it stands to be one of his most adventurous yet, mixing shiny hook-laden psych-pop with lo-fi, spontaneously recorded efforts.

Guided By Voices
Mirrored Aztec

How many albums is it now? Let’s say...one billion. Guided By Voices return (although it’s not as if they really went away) with Mirrored Aztec. It’s their 5th album in 18 months and this time they’ve gone for hooks-a-plenty and a summer vibe. To throw a few curveballs our way though, they’ve employed a school choir and tried their hand at the complex sub-genre Math Rock with a song called, well, ‘Math Rock’.

Robert Pollard
Eat 16 - Soundtrack From Planet Cake

A 237-page book of full-colour collage art made from the indefatigable Robert Pollard, the creative engine behind Ohio indie veterans Guided By Voices. Eat 16 - Soundtrack From Planet Cake comes with a new seven-track EP on 7” vinyl to act as a musical accompaniment for Pollard’s art, all recorded on a boombox in his living room.

Tobin Sprout
Empty Horses

As Robert Pollard’s trusted lieutenant in Guided By Voices for what many consider to be the band’s golden era, Tobin Sprout is one of American indie’s most valuable creative forces. On this new solo album Empty Horses, he engages with an alternative vision for Americana, available on vinyl and a special ‘bookpack’ CD edition with artwork and lyrics.

Guided By Voices
The Bears For Lunch

New cheap (whilst stocks last) copies of this rather excellent 2012 album by the reunited 'classic' line up of Robert Pollard's long running Guided By Voices. It's probably the second best (after Class Clown Spots a UFO) of this period of the band and sees Pollard using an economical form of songwriting where one good riff or chord change seems to suffice per song. Also has the usual batch of very good Tobin Sprout-penned tracks.

Guided By Voices
Man Called Blunder / She wants To Know

Just because they are Guided By Voices they are releasing two singles from their forthcoming album Surrender Your Poppy Field on the same day. Here we have Man Called Blunder, which according to Robert Pollard is GBV’s best ever performance. It is backed with She Wants To Know which is a rerecorded version of the track from Forever Since Breakfast, the band’s 1986 debut album.

Guided By Voices
Volcano

A new year a new Guided By Voices record. Last year they managed to release three albums - one of them was double too. They really are the most prolific of bands. What we have here is Volcano, an anthemic ballad and the first single to be lifted from Surrender Your Poppy Field. Includes a non-album b-side.

Guided By Voices
Sweating The Plague

Robert Pollard slams his hand down hard on the top of his guitar amplifier. Sweat pours from his brow; his eyes, heavily-bagged from the sleepless nights, glower with deranged intensity; his clothes are now but rags, ripped and filthy. ‘Again! Dammit, again! We’ll play … the songs … again.’ ‘B… but Robert’, pipes up one of his fellow Guided By Voices members - it’s hard to tell which seeing as all of the band are now a huddled mass, cowering in the darkest corner of the rehearsal room - ‘Robert, we’re exhausted. We’ve been in this room for three days, playing melodious indie-rock in the Hüsker Dü/Pavement mould non-stop, and we simply can’t go on any further. We need rest. We need food. We need to see our families. We’ve already released two LPs in 2019 anyway - isn’t that enough?’ ‘No!’ shouts Robert, punching a hole in the wall to emphasise his point. ‘No. We go again. We’ll be in here rehearsing our new record Sweating The Plague until it’s done, and it’s done why I say it’s done. Kapeesh?’ ‘Y… yes Robert.’

Guided By Voices
Winecork Stonehenge

It looks like Guided By Voices are gearing up for a hefty release schedule in 2019. They already have Zeppelin Over China, a double album, chalked in for a February release with another album, It’s Warp And Woof, due in April. Before all that excitement however, there are a couple of 7” singles to buy, one of which is Winecork Stonehenge. 7” on Guided By Voices Inc.

Robert Pollard
Kid Marine

Kid Marine was the third album (in a discography which now contains approximately two billion albums) by Guided By Voices indefatigable leader, Robert Pollard. It was originally released in 1999, so this is a spiffing 20th anniversary reissue. Apparently it’s Pollard’s favourite amongst his solo albums. A good enough reason to hit ‘add to cart’.

Guided By Voices
Cool Planet

Nice price on this post-reformation album from  the ever-busy Guided By Voices. Most of their 'classic line up' stuff between 2010-2014 was pretty decent but by Cool Planet they were perhaps scraping that particular barrel clean. Still, there's plenty of lo-fi sludge to wade through here in search of the odd sparkling gem and it's probably going to be the last Pollard/Sprout collaboration for some time.

Guided By Voices
Motivational Jumpsuit

Never write off a Guided By Voices album. What at first sometimes sounds like a grey sludgy mess can in time reveal itself as pop confectionary of the highest order. Take Motivational Jumpsuit, the penultimate 'classic line-up' reunion album. It has a pleasingly crunchy mid-fi production through which emerge shards of classic songwriting with the added bonus of some Tobin Sprout gems. Nice price too on this (at the time of writing).

Guided By Voices
Zeppelin Over China

The insanely prolific Robert Pollard releases yet another collection of grungy niceness with his Guided By Voices crew. At thirty-two songs and seventy-five minutes, Zeppelin Over China is long even by GBV standards. Indeed, it’s remarkable that an album with this many songs can remain so consistently good throughout. Then again, Pollard is a pretty remarkable talent.

Guided By Voices
Warp and Woof

And Another! As Alan Partridge might say. Warp And Woof is Guided By Voices’ ultra-speedy follow-up to February’s double offering, Zeppelin Over China. Robert Pollard and co. have taken their already prolific nature and turbo charged it. This one prides itself on cramming lots of songs into less that 40 minutes, a similar feat to the band’s ‘90s classic Alien Lanes. Let's hope it matches it in quality too. On Guided By Voices Inc.

100 Dougs

Guided By Voices seem to be rattling out the releases. Space Gun was their most recent acclaimed LP and it's due to be followed by It’s Warp and Woof early next year and a future double album. Before it all, here's 100 Dougs, a 7" EP of Country influenced Rock songs to sink your teeth into.

Robert Pollard
Waved Out

Not only do we have to wade through a new Robert Pollard/Guided By Voices record each week, we now have re-issues to contend with. 'Waved out' was Pollard's second second solo album and came from an era where I was still fairly excited about his output. It's good, if not quite as good as it's predecessor 'Not In My Airport'. The highlight is 'People Are Leaving' where Pollard creates a brilliant double melody by singing over himself. It's worth the admission price alone.

Robert Pollard
100

The most recent Guided By Voices album August By Cake was the one hundredth studio album that Robert Pollard has been involved in, a fairly impressive thing by anyone’s standards. To celebrate, this book is being released, featuring the front and back covers of every single one of those 100 albums. 100 is a 200-page book in a 12” x 12” format, so all the LP covers are ‘life-size’.

Space Gun

Since we started our #namethenewguidedbyvoicesalbum hashtag Guided By Voices album titles have become really boring. Here's the latest one  - 'Space Gun'. 'Reversed Hen Tsunami Plot' will just have to wait I suppose. This is the third from the new classic GBV line up which includes such future legends as Mark Shue and Bobby Bare Jr. We're told Robert Pollard's songwriting has reached new heights of brilliance on this one. Hope so.

Ogre's Trumpet

Tobin Sprout - pah! Mitch Mitchell - who? We all know that the new classic Guided By Voices line up is the Pollard/Gillard/March/Shue/Bare Jr one that rocked Asbury Park, New Jersey in August 2017. Were you there? Probably not but now you can relive the sights, the smells and the sounds of the grandpops of lo-fi as they rattle through their last two albums and throw in a smattering of classics from earlier incarnations.

Guided By Voices
Live From Austin, TX

Back in 2004, Robert Pollard had decided that Guided By Voices, a band that had been his baby for more than 20 years, had run it’s course. Live From Austin, Texas was one of the band’s final gigs, and you can now share the emotional night with them again. Available on 2LP vinyl or 2CD+DVD. It needs to be pointed out that Guided By Voices reformed in 2012 and have released a further 9 albums to date.

Guided By Voices
Let's Go Eat The Factory

Let's Go Eat The Factory was the first post re-union album from Guided By Voices originally released in 2010. We were all excited at the time by the return of the classic line up but the album is a sputtering effort with quality control all over the place. Things didn't properly settle down 'til the following years superb Class Clown Spots a UFO but as with very GBV album, Let's Go Eat The Factory has its moments. If you missed out first time round (and its easy to neglect a GBV album here and there) then we got nice price on this.

Guided By Voices
How Do You Spell Heaven

Rather like Mark E Smith, Robert Pollard has a habit of pulling out a plum just when you are thinking it's all over. Re-grouped and re-invigorated with an (almost) all new line up, last years August By Cake was more like the band we remembered and hot on it's heels we get another. Fifteen new tunes from the fab (insert this week's line up number).

Tobin Sprout
Carnival Boy

Tobin Sprout is part of the huge indie ecosystem surrounding Guided By Voices. He spent ten years majorly contributing to the band, but also made music all of his own. 1996 solo debut Carnival Boy is a beautiful set of lo-fi indie songwriting, and it hasn’t really been available since its initial release two decades ago! Now reissued on Burger Records.

Tobin Sprout
Moonflower Plastic (Welcome To My Wigwam)

Tobin Sprout is part of the huge indie ecosystem surrounding Guided By Voices. He spent ten years majorly contributing to the band, and after their initial split in 1997 he put out some music of his own. Moonflower Plastic (Welcome To My Wigwam) is a beautiful set of lo-fi indie songwriting, and it hasn’t really been available since its initial release twenty years ago! Now reissued on Burger Records.

Tobin Sprout
The Universe and Me

Increasingly responsible for the better bits on recent Guided By Voices albums, Tobin Sprout doesn't quite have the all or nothing genius/madman approach of Robert Pollard but what he does have is consistency. It's very hard to find a bad Tobin Sprout track. They are all sort of enjoyable....possibly because most of them use the same tried and tested formula of lo-fi melodic chord progressions and his reedy voice singing hummable melodies that get stuck in your craw.

Guided By Voices
Please Be Honest

The endless productivity of Robert Pollard continues apace with Please Be Honest, designated a Guided By Voices album even though Pollard played every last sound on it. The 15 speedy songs on here give us the latest insights into this remarkably creativity, via a variety of nicely textured tunes. Out on Guided By Voices Inc.

Teenage Guitar
More Lies From The Gooseberry Bush

Robert Pollard is the ringleader of the merry indie rock men Guided By Voices, who have been releasing dozens upon dozens of records since the late 80s. Pollard is renowned for making surreal jangle pop classics that are snipped off at the ends, traditionally playing them out at under two minutes at length. As such, he's got a lot of time to write more songs: his average output a year is about ten records, under about five different aliases. Teenage Guitar is yet another solo project of his, and brings forth the bizarre, experimental reaches of his brain for a concept album with thousands of tracks (well, like, twenty-odd). It's arguably his most conceptual record since Guided By Voices' 'Mag Earwhig!', full of lo-fi humming and loose vignettes. Billed by Pollard and PopMatters as being more Pollard than Pollard, this is definitely an album by Robert Pollard.    Tracks: Go Around (The Apartment Dwellers) Spliced At Acme Fair A Guaranteed Ratio Good Mary's House Skin Ride Full Glass Gone All You Fought For Gear OP No Escape Matthew's Ticker and Shaft  a. come to breakfast b. the girls arrive c. division of swans d. when death has a nice ring The Instant American Normalized New Light Birthplace of the Electric Starter A Year That Could Have Been Worse

English Little League was the fourth Guided By Voices album to be recorded in the fruitful reconvening of the 'classic line up' in the early two thousand and teens or whatever we've decided to call them. Along with such albums as The Bears for Lunch, it is remarkably consistent seeing as though the band recorded six albums in this period. Always inventive, it's one of those albums that after a few listens you wonder how you'd lived without.

Class Clown Spots A UFO is the 2nd album in to be released in 2012 and 18th studio album in all by the prolific indie pop maestros Guided By Voices. The band have also released 17 EPs and 39 singles. Class Clown Spots A UFO has been likened to their '90s classics Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes in terms of quality -- lofty praise indeed! Class Clown Spots A UFO is available on vinyl LP, CD and Cassette.

Bee Thousand

Not only is Bee Thousand widely regarded as one of the best Guided By Voices albums, but it is also widely regarded as one of the best indie rock albums ever made. Reissued for its 20th anniversary, the album has been remastered, is housed in a hefty gatefold sleeve and is pressed on high-quality vinyl. This album is so good, it even had a beer made in its honour - Beer Thousand.

Guided By Voices
Half Smiles Of The Decomposed

'Half Smiles of the Decomposed' was the final Guided By Voices album in their first life before several years of myriad of solo projects prior to their return in 2010. As a result the album always had an air of finality about it particularly in closer 'Huffman Prairie Flying Field' but it's full of their usual razor sharp riffs and pop classic melodies particularly the effortless power-pop of 'Girls of Wild Strawberry'. If you like GBV, you'll need this.

Vampire On Titus

The first album that saw Guided By Voices reach anything approaching national exposure was conversely one of their most lo-fi efforts. Vampire On Titus was a hastily recorded rackety thing but beneath the noise you can hear the bursts of pop that would cement them as one of the prime movers in the alternative scene of the '90s and beyond. Now re-issued on a choice of vinyl and excitingly Robert Pollard's original insert now expanded so it is readable.
