Caterina Barbieri
Ecstatic Computation

Caterina Barbieri is one of modern minimalism’s most curious and vital thinkers, exploring a kind of heightened lysergic trance. Ecstatic Computation is a key title, this is, after all, a piece of truly ecstatic music, Barbieri using modular machines and syncopated patterns for the purpose of extreme sensory overload. It’s as valuable as anything from this utterly singular composer.

Caterina Barbieri / Eleh
Untitled

Important Records (Coil, Xiu Xiu) are dropping two Caterina Barbieri records on the same day. Concurrently with her new LP Born Again In The Voltage we also get this split album alongside Important mainstay Eleh. Both of them contribute a side to Untitled, and the pair’s droning synthscapes complement each other so well that it becomes hard to tell which side belongs to which artist.

Caterina Barbieri
Born Again In The Voltage

When Caterina Barbieri says that she was Born Again In The Voltage, she really means it. Barbieri claims that, back in 2013, her first encounter with a Buchla 200 synthesiser completely changed how she thought about music. A year later and the classically-trained Barbieri was cutting spacious electro-acoustic workouts on the 200 at Stockholm’s Elektronmusikstudion alongside cellist Antonello Mostacci. Four of the rich synthscapes created in those sessions are presented by Important Records here.

Caterina Barbieri
Patterns Of Consciousness

Caterina Barbieri uses analogue synthesisers to create her music, although she is certainly a composer rather than a just-having-a-play bleep merchant. Patterns Of Consciousness is her second full-length album, and it stretches over two LPs. Ideal listening for fans of wild arpeggiation and electronic texture exploration. On Important Records.
