Grizzly Bear Vinyl, CD & tapes by Grizzly Bear at Norman Records
Originally a solo venture for the artistic musings of frontman Ed Droste, it's a miracle that Grizzly Bear became what it is today. As if stumbling into meticulousness, the band turned its haphazard and shambolic folk frenzies into an ornate, elegant pop pastiche, converting the boundless energy of Yellow House into the form and precision of Veckatimest. Since then, Droste has been working alongside psychedelic arcitect Daniel Rossen to create some of the most beguiling song environments to grace our ears.
Released in the same year as Merriweather Post Pavilion, Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest became an indie rock staple, beloved for its forthright baroque bangers. "Two Weeks" is an unforgettable example of their pop precision; they chose not to replicate it, wisely eschewing their supposed opus for the stormy aggressions of Shields and the visceral, often harrowing sounds heard on Painted Ruins. In their current iteration, they've landed on a sound that matches their lushness with a force-field of compression, enrapturing the listener in the seasons and settings they reside in. For my money, it's the best material they've ever made -- subtler and less catchy, perhaps, but with more force than ever before. A partnership of call and response, Droste and Rossen continue writing some of the most immense indie rock out there.
