Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever Vinyl, CD & tapes by Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever at Norman Records
Maybe it's a little premature to be calling Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever an office band, but we do love them so. A bunch of Aussies who make a staggering jangle pop that somehow sounds to me like if The Go-Betweens were Ought, they are twee pop's greatest reinvention. A little EP called The French Press caught our ear off the cuff, inviting us in for a breeze before hitting us with an unexpectedly plaintive sound. With the power to sublimate song structures by the mere inclination of a better riff they could be using, their sound blends together the expected and unexpected, subverting slacker tropes into something that's more than mere ear balm.
If our interest was piqued with that EP, it was all but satisfied on Hope Downs, their first LP proper. Obvious single "Talking Straight" is a song in two parts, its cage-rattling verses setting up a colosseum of tension before a completely contradictory chorus of game-changing hooks. A band happy to make the most simple and effective ploys for our heart, the LP delivered dozens of these moments, accenting garage rock with light acoustic strums and shared vocal duties that offered real bait-and-switch effect. We won't stop listening to it any time soon.
