Phew / Oren Ambarchi / Jim O'Rourke
Live recording of a performance featuring three heavy-weights of avant-garde and experimental music. Jim O'Rourke and Oren Ambarchi who have far too many previous collaborations to name, including Fennesz, Ulver, Faust play alongside Japanese avant-garde vocalist Phew. Ana da Silva & Phew
Tantalising collaboration between Phew, a Japanese electronic musician, and Ana da Silva, a founder member of The Raincoats. Island is a long-distance file-sharing collaboration with much to say and feel about distance and difference. Abstracted tone-drones and quasi-rhythmic clicks merge with treated spoken-word in both Japanese and Portuguese, with intensive and intriguing results. Released by Shouting Out Loud!
When someone talks about 'Sound Art', I imagine that this is probably exactly what they are hearing in their head. Phew is a Japanese voice artist who is constantly able to layer her voice alongside different sounds to make you feel the strangest of emotions and sensations. From tingles down your spine, to a feeling of impending doom. Voice Hardcore is released on Mesh-Key on vinyl LP and CD through Bereket, featuring alternative artwork.
Japanese vocalist Phew was a member of Japanese psych weirdos Aunt Sally. Her self-titled solo debut was originally released in 1981 and recorded legendary German producer Conny Plank’s studio. Can’s Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit feature along with founder of Pass Records Yoshitaka Goto. A classic made in Germany, from the land of the rising sun. LP on Studio Mule.
Tokyo singer / producer Phew has fronted the punk band Aunt Sally and collaborated with Boredoms, Einsturzende Neubauten and half of Can over the years, so she’s evidently got the chops. On Light Sleep she has created some incredible songs for electronics and voice: some drift languidly while others erupt. LP release on Mesh-Key, limited to 500 copies.
