Modern Studies
The Weight of the Sun

The Weight of The Sun is the new studio album from folk-based kosmiche explorers Modern Studies. As their previous efforts (2016’s Swell To Great and 2018’s Welcome Strangers) would suggest, it showcases Emily Scott, Rob St John, Pete Harvey and Joe Smillie’s natural abilities at combining melody with texture.

Modern Studies and Tommy Perman
Emergent Slow Arcs

This independent stores-only album (lucky us!) is a reimagining of last year’s Emergent Slow Arcs album by Modern Studies, rendered this time by Tommy Perman. The bucolic, naturalistic sounds of the original are given a modern electronic makeover, giving the whole album an extraordinarily timeless quality.

Modern Studies
Welcome Strangers

Recorded in the charmingly-named Pumpkinfield Studio in Perthshire, the elaborate Welcome Strangers is what Scottish quartet Modern Studies did next. Drawn from the myriad interests of all four members, the album dresses a core of folk-pop compositions with all sorts of subtle electronics, experimental instrumental and recording techniques and a wide array of sound sources.

Modern Studies
Swell to Great

Modern Studies have knack for creating haunting, doomed landscapes that retain a sense of beauty, with lo-fi and dated instrumentation. If you ever wanted to watch The Wicker Man, mute the final damning scene and play something above it, then nothing would be more fitting then Swell to Great.
