VIDEOTAPEMUSIC Vinyl, CD & tapes from this artist at Norman Records
Well this is just lovely. Japanese producer Videotapemusic has been doing his thing for about a decade now, releasing five albums in his home country, but Souvenir is his first LP to reach these shores. The basic idea is that he finds bargain-bin VHS tapes and repurposes their sounds, fleshing them out with full band and studio trickery. It’s a lovely mix of hypnagogic pop, Japanese psych-folk sounds and wistful Captured Tracks-style indie. An Ariel Pink you could take home to meet your parents.
Two Tokyo producers team up to share their love of the film Bangkok Nites via the medium of lovely music. Shintaro Sakamoto and VIDEOTAPEMUSIC extensively sampled various Thai records to form the basic materials of their A Night In Bangkok EP, and the results come out beautifully. 12” on EM Records.
