Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats Vinyl, CD & tapes by Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats at Norman Records
Who's in the mood for some heavy?
Despite their colourful name, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats are a gloomy band, retro grumps in charge of a bold, cavernous sound that takes the listener back to the days when doom metal first got its name for real. Just past Black Sabbath but not quite beyond Pentagram, their sound is gleefully traditional, the kind of thing you straight-up raise an eyebrow at when you realise it's coming out of this decade. They care not for trends and developments; they simply wanna play that metal. Good for them, I say.
As they've gone on, Uncle Acid have become that very good kind of old-school metal band: one not afraid of invention, as long as it serves the pastiche they're playing up. They still sound like their old favourites on records like Mind Control, but with swathes of organ and the odd vocal harmony, suggestive of other music hovering around their favourite forgotten decades. A bit of psychedelic flavour has become something of an undercurrent for them, with endlessly grooving repetitions becoming a key player in their churn. We once sold them as 'Hard Rock Meets The Beatles' -- that gives you an idea of where, or when, their head is at.
