Dorothy Ashby & Frank Wess
In a Minor Groove

Jazz harp: fuck yeah. In A Minor Groove is a lovely little 1958 release that harpist Dorothy Ashby made with flute and saxophone maestro Frank Wess. It is fabulous to hear the harp leading a jazz combo like this, and some of the intertwinings of harp strings and flute breaths are magical to hear. This is the first reissue of this album to use the original mono sources, for the finest possible sound. On Real Gone Music.

Dorothy's Harp

The harp isn’t the first instrument that comes to mind when you think of jazz soloists, but the late Dorothy Ashby made it her unlikely axe and enjoyed an 11-album career. Her 1969 album features funky interpretations of The Beatles’ Fool on the Hill, Bacharach & David’s This Girl’s In Love With You, Jimmy Webb’s By the Time I Get to Phoenix, and some Brazilian exotica. The record would later be mined for breakbeats by crate-diggers and samplers. Blue vinyl edition, limited to 750 copies.

Dorothy Ashby was a rare thing: a jazz harpist. Lord did she make it work: this 1961 self-titled album of hers features versions of pieces by Duke Ellington and Neal Hefti, as well as originals, performed in a trio setting with bass and drums. The harp is exquisitely played, and with no small amount of jazz swing too! Reissue edition of 500 LPs.
