Khotin Vinyl, CD & tapes by Khotin at Norman Records
Khotin’s albums New Tab and Beautiful You were slow-burn successes of 2018, quietly accruing enough momentum that the latter is now being reissued courtesy of Ghostly International. It’s easy to see why the Canadian artist’s work has struck a chord with people - Beautiful You is a gorgeous post-Chillwave haze, all lo-fi recording and dreamy synths. Think Pender Street Steppers if they took out all of the beats and just let the thing float.

Pacific Rhythm might be a young label - at the time of writing (July 2018) their Discogs numbers fewer than ten releases - but the Vancouver outfit have already forged a reputation as selectors of impeccable taste. To a roster that includes superb drops from Flørist and D. Tiffany we can now add a vinyl pressing of Khotin’s 2017 cassette New Tab. This ten-track release is a collection of lo-fi synth ditties that sound like the Balearic beats of Tiffany with the drums stripped out. Cerebral and lovely.
The second release from Dylan Khotin-Foote aka Khotin (1080p, Normals Welcome etc.) under his Waterpark handle has the Canadian producer in fine form. 'Data Orb' is a tranquil breakbeat driven house cut with bleeping melody, spiralling and glistening synths and a smattering of acid. On the flip, 'Nessie's Revenge' bubbles from beneath, with delicate melodies floating to the surface and gets the ambient treatment with a bonus beatless version.
Waterpark is the latest alias for producer Khotin. The nice thing about creating a new outlet for your music (complete with its own label imprint) is that you can build all the music around a particular theme: Waterpark seems to be going with a watery party vibe. Speedline Connect / Sun Runner feels like a good time on a sunny day, except that parts of the track have been submerged in the pool… 12” release.
The third release in Pacific Rhythm’s series which features artists exclusively from Vancouver Slim Media Player, Khotin (previously released on 1080p, Electric Sound Broadcast - who has also released as Elka. This “Vancouver Sound” mixes acid breaks and squelches with deep house pads, chords and clarity.
Baikal Acid is a new set of dreamy house hybrids from Canadian producer Khotin. This limited vinyl 12” on the much-hyped label 1080p blends distorted 707 basslines with spaced-out ambient interludes. This is four tracks of lonely kosmische jams, melancholy samples and harsh kick drums for bedroom ravers.
