Norman Westberg

It’s that bloke, the guitarist from SWANS. Yep, here’s Norman Westberg’s solo work and he has been a prolific contributor to various projects over the years; from film appearances to bands Five Dollar Priest and The Heroine Sheiks. On 13, Westberg manipulates his guitar through a series of effects giving them reverb and delay galore. It’s a minimalist, often unsettling sound which is generated, but always enthralling and transportative. Previously only available in an edition of 75, Room40 release this in a re-mastered edition.

Norman Westberg

Long-time Swans man Norman Westberg follows up on last solo reissue 13 with MRI, also for Lawrence English’s Room40 label. These recordings, which feature Westberg pulling his guitar through some deep and heavy processes, were initially self-released: this reissue is freshly mastered, and also features a brand new piece.

Jasper Sits Out

As well as beng the guitarist in Swans, Norman Westberg has had a fair few other side projects as well as working on his own, much more minimal pieces. Originally self-released with only 100 copies in 2014 Room40 are bringing Jasper Sits to a larger audience. The precise and conscious manipulation of tonality through repetition is here in full effect, without the big band flavour.

The Chance To

Norman Westberg, the really tall one from Swans, has been treating us to archival reissues recently, but here is some exciting new music from him. The Chance To is a really impressive suite of guitar compositions, using treatments and overtones and minimal-maximal talents to carve out some powerful sonic space. CD edition from LCR Records.

Norman Westberg
The All Most Quiet

Having been in numerous, yet short lived, projects Norman Westberg is undoubtedly most known for his work in Swans. Alongside, his solo work has been constant. Putting most of it out himself, he has now turned to Hallow Ground for this two track album. Opposing his rhythmic power in Swans, his solo work is far more abstract and consists of blending tonal and atonal guitar swells.. The Swans terror and tension is still very much in there.
