Elliott Smith
Elliott Smith

Confusingly perhaps, Elliott Smith was the second solo album by the esteemed songwriter following on from his debut Roman Candle. It was the first album where we perhaps collectively thought we were in the presence of greatness. Despite (or maybe because of) its lo-fi- back to basics sound it contains some of Smiths best compositions and paves the way for his all time classic Either/Or.

Elliott Smith
Either/Or: Expanded Edition

Twenty years on from its initial release, Elliott Smith’s much-beloved third album Either / Or receives an Expanded Edition reissue. As well as the original album in remastered form, this edition adds a disc of 1997 live recordings and as-yet-unreleased studio recordings.

Elliott Smith
Division Day

Division Day by Elliott Smith was a non-album single, originally released in 1996 in between his self-titled second album and his masterpiece, Either/Or. Division Day is Elliott’s first foray into more upbeat pop following two acoustic albums. Now repressed on tri-colour vinyl and limited to 1000 copies. An absolute must-buy for Elliott Smith fans who missed out first time round.

Elliott Smith
Figure 8

Shabby and shambling of appearance, Elliott Smith's look matched his songs in his earlier records. He was he weird loner who would win the race because he was so damn good. On Figure 8 they airbrushed both his face and his sound making a slick and polished record that saw those loveable rough edges smoothed away. Still they couldn't completely ruin Elliott Smith and Figure 8 features many examples of his the Beatles-esque prowess with a haunted melody. "I'm the wrong kind of person to famous" he once said and it's true  - we loved him just the way he was.

Elliott Smith
Heaven Adores You Soundtrack

Heaven Adores You is a new documentary on the beloved Elliott Smith, and this release contains the soundtrack. Interestingly the filmmakers didn’t just use Smith’s ‘Greatest Hits’: instead, this collection is full of rare treats, such as Smith’s first TV appearance and some ‘Untitled Guitar Finger Picking’ recorded when he was just 14. Will prove fascinating to any Smith fans.

Elliott Smith
Roman Candle

Roman Candle was the first solo album by Elliott Smith who at that point had been writing lovelorn songs for Heatmiser which contrasted somewhat with the ban's usual upbeat approach. He struck out on his own with a stripped back record that was the polar opposite of the noise and grunge that was around at the time. He'd go on to better work but Roman Candle was where it all began.

Elliott Smith
New Moon

New Moon was a posthumous collection of unreleased songs by master songwriter Elliott Smith. It was culled from sessions from his albums Either/Or and Elliott Smith as well as from radio sessions. The stripped back sound sees his songwriting at its most instinctive and it is a treasure trove of rarities by this much-missed artist.

Elliott Smith
From A Basement On The Hill

I have to admit I can't really listen to this posthumous record by Elliott Smith. The circumstances of his death just seem to overshadow the whole thing. These were the recordings he was working on at the time of his passing and see him in pretty good musical shape on a sprawling album that isn't as dark as you might expect. It is though a claustrophobic, schizophrenic record at times but it does feel that posthumously Smith had made his White Album.

Elliott Smith
Either/Or

Elliott’s third solo record, and his first after the break up of Heatmiser. An essential release in his back catalogue, Either/Or maintains the lo-fi intimacy of previous efforts Roman Candle and Elliott Smith, whilst upping the complexity and ambition of his arrangements. Miss Misery was even nominated for a bloomin' Oscar! Reissued on a 180gm LP, on Universal. Sad!

Elliott Smith
An Introduction To…

An Introduction To Elliott Smith gathers together highlights from the late singer/songwriter’s career. It includes tracks from his debut album, Roman Candle up to the posthumously released album, From A Basement On A Hill and Miss Misery - the song from Good Will Hunting that earned him an Oscar nomination. It’s essentially a great collection of songs from an artist who needs no introduction.
