David Allred
The Cell

David Allred is a Canadian songwriter that tackled themes of human fallibility and frailty on his first album, 'The Transition', and elucidates on this theme on sophomore record 'The Cell'. He has the same timbre of voice that John Martyn has, like a soft saxophone played in chocolate. If single 'Nature's Course' is anything to go by, 'The Cell' looks like a textured, beautiful, and, at times, grand album. I would also encourage you to watch the live version of 'Ahoy (1+1=X)' on YouTube, like a modern Arthur Russell; wow.

David Allred
The Transition

David Allred’s The Transition arrives on Erased Tapes (A Winged Victory For The Sullen, Nils Frahm). There’s a nice interplay of chamber composition, folk music and close harmony going on here. ‘The Garden’, for instance, is the sort of thing you imagine Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears might have got up to were they alive today.

Allred & Broderick
Find The ways

Peter Broderick and David Allred’s musical partnership is a beautiful thing: they use only their voices and their chosen string instruments (violin and upright bass), and they record live, without overdubs or edits. The result is intimate friendship music, simply made but very deep. Find The Ways is released by Erased Tapes.

David Allred

David Allred has often worked with American multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick after Allred transcribed one of his songs. Broderick describes Allred’s musical ideas as odd, honest and intriguing. On his new 10” EP, Woods,  he works with Broderick’s sister, Heather Woods Broderick, making a beautiful sound using layered vocal harmonies. Most definitely intriguing.
