Maribou State
Kingdoms In Colour

Maribou State return with their sophomore LP. The follow-up to 2015’s Portrait is another collection of breezy, emotive electronica that takes in plunderphonics, festival house, post-dubstep and more. Hopping on a trend in this sort of thing at the moment, there seems to be a Bollywood flavour to some of the samples. Khruangbin guest on the Bonobo-y ‘Feel Good’.

Feel Good

Khruangbin and Maribou State makes sense. It’s a sort of Lovebox Festival rendering of the King Krule/Mount Kimbie paradigm. ‘Feel Good’, which features a choppy vocal sample bobbing along in a river of playlistable psych-pop, is very much par for the course. This release also comes with a re-pressing of both the original and club versions of MS’s recent single ‘Turnmills’.

Turnmills

The return of Maribou State - ‘Turnmills’ is their first new material in three years - sees the duo paying tribute to the London rave venue of the same name. Turnmills shut down in 2008, and in light of the spate of nightclub closures in the subsequent decade the pair’s decision to bring the issue back into conversation feels timely. Music-wise the track is typical MS fare, festival two-step ala Bonobo, and only 100 copies are being pressed.

Portraits Remixed

Portraits, the recent debut album from Maribou State, has gone down rather well with the leftfield-leaning electronic heads, and now a few of them have stepped up to remix tracks from it. We’ve got reworks from FYI Chris, Axel Boman, Glenn Astro and the spectacularly named Ross From Friends. 12” on the Counter label.

Portraits

Maribou State (whose name I cannot help but read as some crossover of Dan Snaith’s two monikers, Caribou and Manitoba) make music of a dance-pop persuasion, echoing elements rushing together into tightly emotive vocal house formations. Portraits includes vocals from Holly Walker and Jono McCleery, and the special edition comes with a whole extra disc of remixes.

Maribou State
Rituals

Rituals is quite a tight track. Reminiscent of the Burial/Four Tet collaborations with a twinge of Gold Panda, this 12” will probably lift itself right off our shelves. Maribou State are rising to fame, and with a track like this it only seems fair. This is the first single of Portraits, their upcoming album. Released on sturdy 180gr vinyl.
