Variant Vinyl, CD & tapes by Variant at Norman Records
Remasters and a first release of some of the demos Radius sent off to Deepchord around the turn of the millennium. Now being released by echospace [detroit] these lost scuzzy dub techno chuggers are an all too rare chance to get to listen to Radius. Make the most of it. Limited to 500 copies.
More deep explorations of the Echospace universe. Selected highlights from Phase90’s immersive Infinitati album have been re-imagined (one ‘Possession Dub’, one ‘Remake’ and one ‘Metamorphose’ to be precise) by the producer Intrusion, with excellent heavy results from the deep dub depths of the mixing board. 12” on echospace [detroit].
If you didn’t know yet, cv313 are also known as Echospace. The duo of Rod Modell and Stephen Hitchell have been leaders in the dub techno field for many a year now - so long, in fact, that they’re able to make new records out of jams they had nearly two decades ago. Glass City Sessions features reworkings of some tracks they played in abandoned asylum outside of Detroit back in 2000.

A real treat for any fans of Radius. Interpolation Tapes [Restoration 2/3] is the result of a whole years work restoring the music from its original tapes which had begun to decay. Despite all these tracks have been through, the result is as fresh as Radius has ever been. The second release of three.
Hooray for dub techno! The good people at echospace [detroit] have worked very very hard to rescue the aged original tapes that Radius recorded his interpolations on. As the name implies Interpolation Tapes [Restoration 3/3] is the third act in this labour of love. And the hard work has paid off, these tracks sound as good as ever.
Ten years of variants, reworks, and redesigns from Radius. On Obsolete Machines [Variant Rewords] Stephen Hitchell takes dub techno to its Nth degree, and dubs out his own dub techno tracks. The amount of space he's found in these tracks is truly remarkable. FFO: Techno from very far away.
Further deep-space broadcasts from the analogue sound-worlds of Variant, a pseudonym of Stephen Hitchell aka Intrusion, Phase90, Radius and half of cv313 alongside Rod Modell. This is version 1.2 of Sequential Sleep, a long stretch of field recordings, tape-manipulation and electronics that drifts and hums like the background radiation of the universe. One to really sink into, and maybe sleep to too. Double CD on echospace [detroit].
Detroit’s Echospace label finally unleash this thought-lost opus from cv313. Apparently literally adrift underwater in a flood, Dimensional Space was rescued and lovingly reassembled from four years worth of decrepit master tapes. Appropriately, this makes for murky and deeply meditative aesthetics explored over the course of a triple LP. Highly limited and easter egg-laden.

Extremely deep business from echospace [detroit] producer Phase90, who used field recordings from Detroit’s Masonic Temple in order to imbue the record with a supernatural darkness. Absonia, which was recorded for an art installation last year, is pitch-black ambient space dub, just the way you echospace [detroit] fans love it.
Phase90’s album Infinitati was already a great example of the echospace [detroit] house sound, but this dubbed-out reworking by Intrusion might make it an even better one! As well as finding eight different ways to say ‘remix’ without saying ‘remix’, Intrusion has thoroughly spaced out the mix, using looping, tape manipulation and various desk business to reach even deeper than before.
Wayward, slow-burning ghosts of 1990s Detroit dub techno, courtesy of Stephen “Echospace etc.” Hitchell’s retired Radius project, have been canonised at last on a public release. Interpolation Tapes [Restoration One] comprises seventy minutes of never-before-heard material, originally recorded on computerless hardware to 8-track cassette between 1993 and 2001, and now lovingly restored for your tech-noir daydreams. Sumptuous, pulsing sprawl themes channelled from the source.
Radius is yet another one of echospace head honcho Stephen Hitchell's many aliases - see also Intrusion, Phase90, Variant, Soultek. 'Obsolete Machines' includes some cv313 reshapes that will sooth and stroke your face, a bit like like the musical equivalent of a hot bath. We know what to expect from this dub techno craftsman, and we always know it'll be lovely.
The echospace [detroit] label keeps on producing high-grade ambient techno in their own inimitable style. The Other Side, the latest material from cv313 (the pairing of Stephen Hitchell and Rod Modell), is a single 60-minute track of space-dub coaxed from the mixing desk by your two ambient guides. Slow cosmic atmospheres. CD release packed in an imported Japanese sleeve.
Techno and dub artist Stephen Hitchell goes by many aliases, including the aptly named Intrusion, under which he released 'The Seduction of Silence' in 2009. Revered in its scene, the album is now getting a CD reissue through Echospace, in an attempt to chart the atmosphere and circumstances Intrusion made the album around (in other words: lots of outtakes and b-sides from those very same sessions).
The Vortextual series is another long-form journey (or series of journeys) into cosmic, ambient-dub deep space. Vortextual [element four] is surely the most abstracted yet in this series, setting the synths loose to slowly crawl all over the sound-field, backed with traces of low dub bass.CD in a limited edition of 300, on echospace [detroit].
The Vortextual series is another long-form journey (or series of journeys) into cosmic, abstracted-house deep space. Variant takes a third approach to the base materials on Vortextual [element three], layering ambient synths over subtle sub-bass throbbings. CD in a limited edition of 300. On echospace [detroit].
The Vortextual series is another long-form journey (or series of journeys) into cosmic, abstracted-house deep space. Variant spreads out his work for an hour here, ambient synth drifting slowly around the sound-field, underpinned by a subtle sub-bass throb. CD in a limited edition of 300, with a nice sticker on the front. On echospace [detroit].
The echospace [detroit] label keeps on producing high-grade ambient techno in their own inimitable style. The latest material from cv313 (the pairing of Stephen Hitchell and Rod Modell) is a document of an airy live set that drifts and pulses and crackles. Close your eyes and lose yourself to the Land Of The Low Lying Clouds. Eco-friendly CD release.
Further broadcasts from the analogue sound-worlds of Variant, the more ambient project of Stephen Hitchell aka Intrusion, Phase90, Radius and half of cv313 alongside Rod Modell. Thru The Cosmos is a series of pieces for modular synth, though perigee and apogee contain no look-at-me synth heroics whatsoever: this is deep, subtle, space-drift music, each piece stretching out over a full hour. Double CD on echospace [detroit].
Echospace captured live in concert at the Detroit Paranormal Society party at Ghosts In The Sound mid-2013. Rod Modell and Steven Hitchell’s dubbed-out techno was in particularly fine form on this night, pushing the crowd into spacey reveries. With a mixture of reworked classics and new material, this is an excellent release from the core Echospace duo. CD on echospace [detroit].
Further broadcasts from the analogue sound-worlds of Variant, the more ambient project of Stephen Hitchell aka Intrusion, Phase90, Radius and half of cv313 alongside Rod Modell. Thru The Cosmos is a series of pieces for modular synth, although please note that neither pallas or perseids contain any look-at-me synth heroics: this is deep, subtle, space-drift music, with each piece stretching out over a full hour. Double CD on echospace [detroit].
Further broadcasts from the analogue sound-worlds of Variant, the more ambient project of Stephen Hitchell aka Intrusion, Phase90, Radius and half of cv313 alongside Rod Modell. Aurora’s Dream is apparently the culmination of two years work: this is precision-tooled deep-drift ambient techno of the highest order from a master of the form. Two different takes on the piece here, each lasting an hour. Double CD on echospace [detroit].
The broadcasts continue to emanate from the analogue sound-worlds of Variant, the more ambient project of Stephen Hitchell aka Intrusion, Phase90, Radius and half of cv313 alongside Rod Modell. Pyralis is an hour-long slab of cosmic ambience, with electronic loops and drones mixing with field recordings of a Michigan bonfire. Released by echospace [detroit] as a CD packed in an imported Japanese sleeve.
2 and a half hours of slow-growing warm ambience from Variant. Sequential Sleep [ver1.0] is composed of sounds derived from forest field recordings and various forms of synthesis, blended together with an expert hand for an engrossing deep-space journey. ‘Granular Mix’ on one disc, ‘Modular Mix’ on the other. From echospace [detroit].
One continuous hour-long piece of sound here from Variant, produced for Movement Festival in Detroit. This is like the cracks between techno’s beats expanded and explored: only occasionally do rhythms rear up. Silver-sticker-coated CD in a strictly limited edition (only one per customer, form a neat queue), on echospace [detroit].
One continuous hour-long piece of sound here from Variant. Vortextual [Element Two] continues [Element One]’s deep dives into the cracks between techno’s beats: this is a mostly beatless ambient excursion through dub-space. Silver-sticker-coated CD in a strictly limited edition (only one per customer, form a neat queue), on echospace [detroit].
Variant presents Oceans End, a continuous half-hour slab of dubbed-out space ambience. The track has stuttering rhythms to keep things moving, but mostly this is about losing yourself to the wash of the cosmic synth-waves that flow through the track. CD in a strictly limited edition (only one per customer, form a neat queue), on echospace [detroit].
Slowly, dauntingly and unstoppable, Dreaming Thru Vector is an almost megalomanic drone project. With deeply resonating synthesizers and an absolutely minimal rhythm section, Variant push the envelope filters to new levels. This unique live recording of their smash minimalist hit is even more ethereal, focusing on the melodic component rather than the beats. Recommended if you like getting lost.

Chromesthesia is an almost hour long track that slowly transforms itself through different pallets of noise. Building itself to an eventually colorful whole, Variant’s newest project is one that is absorbing and all-encompassing, hypnotizing and disorienting and will eventually make you wonder where you are and how you got there.
