Earthless Vinyl, CD & tapes from this artist at Norman Records
Earthless have a reputation for being a good live band. That said, so would you if you had four concert albums to your name. The latest one, From The West, contains audio captured at a gig in San Francisco on the eve of the release of March 2018’s Black Heaven LP. It’s a very Black Sabbath/Led Zeppelin kind of affair, all wailing vox and fuzzy riffs.
Earthless streamline their sound for their fourth LP. Black Heaven relies far less on the spacey prog-metal jams that have characterised their previous albums. Instead, four of the six tracks here are vocal-led metal songs in the vein of Black Sabbath. Lead single ‘Gifted By The Wind’ features riffs aplenty and some very soulful singing. A welcome change of pace.
You can pretty much call them a supergroup, made up of members from Circle Jerks, Burning Brides, Redd Kross, and Earthless, and here they captured in their natural state - raw and pure energy. Smashing out 15 songs in under 30 minutes whilst supporting Dinosaur Jr. in 2011. Limited repress on Outer Battery.
Earthless and Harsh Toke are both super-heavy, super-stoner style bands, perfectly suited to complementing one another on this split release. They also both contain pro-skaters, but I don’t know if you’ll be able to hear that aspect. Acid Crusher / Mount Swan is, of course, only for the sludgiest psych-heads among you: embrace it. Out on Tee Pee.
Some live psych show-boating comes courtesy of Earthless here, who unleash their brand of uncompromising stoner rock onto the world. They enlist Dinosaur Jr's J. Mascis and Heavy Blanket's Graham Clise to get the guitars going, suggesting they'll hire anyone who likes their guitar to scream with dissonance. Shred slowly, my friends.
