Gloria Ann Taylor
Love Is A Hurtin' Thing

Love Is A Hurtin’ Thing is the highly anticipated anthology by Gloria Ann Taylor. Despite her obvious talent, a Grammy nomination, making Motown sit up and take notice and that she moved in the same circles as soul/funk legends James Brown and Bootsy Collins, Taylor quit the music business after the heartbreak of a failed relationship with record producer Walter Whisenhunt. Recorded between 1971-77 she left some golden soul behind though - music that was influenced by her gospel roots and came from deep inside her. Gloria Ann Taylor was the real deal.

Love Is a Hurtin' Thing / Brother Less Than a Man

Gloria Ann Taylor has been getting some attention recently. Her EP Deep Inside Of You is one of those incredibly expensive gems, hunted down by those after some deep disco soul. Now an anthology of hers is being released and this is the lead single; Love is a Hurtin’ Thing, a wonderful piece of roaring soul and funk with some great guitar work and Gloria’s intense vocals perfuming the track. It’s backed by Brother Less Than a Man, a hammond organ piece of psychedelic funk. A 7” vinyl.

Gloria Ann Taylor
Deep Inside You

Apparently one of those records which goes for silly money online, a reissue is now available to your wallet’s relief of this classic soul number Deep Inside You by Gloria Ann Taylor. It’s a soulful, jazzy piece which oozes class. Unfortunately for us her music career was cut short by her quitting, but there's still plenty to enjoy. Like this!

Walter "Whiz" Whisenhunt Orchestra (featuring Gloria Ann Taylor)

Gloria Ann Taylor was a singer-songwriter from smalltown Alabama with roots in gospel, who then moved to Minnesota with her family and ended up marrying composer, arranger and conductor Walter Whisenhunt, with whom she moved to LA. The two's marriage was shortlived, but the funky soul tracks the two laid down in that brief period are still sought after by collectors; a charmingly assured and expansively arranged mixture of proto-disco rhythms, funky electric guitar and sweeping orchestral scale led by Taylor's impassioned diva-ish holler.
