The Durutti Column
Without Mercy

Mancunian post-punks The Durutti Column already had three LPs under their belt by the time they got round to 1984’s Without Mercy, but the previous trio of records wouldn’t have prepared their fans for what the band were about to get up to. Under the tutelage of Tony Wilson the group abandoned their wistful dream-pop style for contemporary classical composition. Drawing on the English classical tradition and the post-minimalist developments of artists like Arthur Russell, The Durutti Column end up with near forty minutes of blissy chamber music that occasionally crosses over into chamber-pop. These New Puritans may have been taking note. Now reissued with extra live recordings and bonus tracks on Factory Benelux.

The Durutti Column
M24J (Anthology)

The Durutti Column were Tony Wilson’s first signing to Factory Records, and remained an understated constant throughout the label’s existence and beyond. Vini Reilly’s minimal, mostly instrumental arrangements, fluid guitar playing and gentle introversion were an atypical product of post punk, but in retrospect seem to prefigure much in indie and post rock. Over the years Reilly moved from the the drumbox austerity of notoriously sandpaper-sleeved debut The Return of… to incorporate everything from classical elements to soul samples alongside his instantly recognisable playing. If you only know Reilly from his work on Morrissey’s Viva Hate, or the few occasions his work made an impact beyond cult status, this double retrospective is a fine overview.

The Durutti Column
Fidelity

Oh lord my favourite the Durutti Column record on vinyl at last. Fidelity was one of Vini Reilly's his later and lesser known works but it should not be underestimated. It places his trademark guitar sound amidst sleek electronica and breakbeats. A gorgeously atmospheric album  - steeped in Manchester  - that shown an artist unwilling to stand still. This clear and blue vinyl edition features new cover art and two bonus tracks.

The Durutti Column
Obey The Time

Factory Benelux could probably be re-issuing the Durutti Column records until the end of time if they so wished. This time it's the turn of their 8th album Obey the Time. The album saw leader Vini Reilly explore electronic textures influenced by the acid house explosion of the time. There's an extra disc of live recordings from a show at Whitworth Hall in 1990.

The Durutti Column
Domo Arigato v2.0

Originally setup by Tony Wilson and signed to his Factory records label, Manchester based avant garde ensemble The Durutti Column recorded Domo Arigato live in Tokyo in 1985. Mixed and mastered straight after the concert before they had to fly home they were never truly happy with it. Now Factory Benelux have revisited the album, returning to the original tapes and spending the time they didn’t have on polishing it to perfection. Includes a bonus 7” single and digital copy.

The Durutti Column
Another Setting

Album number three from indie stalwarts The Durutti Column. Another Setting was first out in 1983, and now gets a well-deserved reissuing. The original eleven tracks are boosted up to a total of seventeen here, thanks to a selection of rare and live cuts that were previously hard to come across. Released by Factory Benelux

The Durutti Column
LC

The second Durutti Column album, LC, was first released in 1981, and it still carries a certain remarkable feel to it. These expanded reissues present the original album in remastered form, and add in a number of compilation tracks, demos, and other rarities: the exact number of bonus tracks varies depending on whether you fancy CD or LP versions.

The Durutti Column
Chronicle LX : XL

This special edition of The Durutti Column’s Chronicle LX:XL is released to celebrate Vini Reilly’s 60th birthday. It is an expanded edition of the album, hence XL, which was originally commissioned to be performed live at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall. A relationship break-up and serious illness have served as a backdrop to the creation of the music. This is an extremely limited release and is available as a deluxe 2CD package.

The Durutti Column
The Return Of The Durutti Column

Factory Benelux presents a new vinyl edition of landmark album The Return of the Durutti Column, housed in a revised version of the iconic sandpaper sleeve first issued by Factory Records in January 1980. A collaboration between virtuoso guitarist Vini Reilly and legendary Manchester producer Martin Hannett,The Return of the Durutti Columnpaired Reilly’s non-rock sketches with Hannett’s electronic textures to produce “perfectly realised, correctly ambient and inventive music” (NME). The infamous sandpaper sleeve was somewhat less user friendly. Inspired by a 1959 Situationist publication by Guy Debord and Asger Jorn, the relentless iconoclasts at Factory hoped that the abrasive packaging would destroy existing record collections. This new 2013 edition on Factory Benelux develops rather than replicates the original packaging. On the front cover, an 11-inch square sheet of coarse sandpaper is seated in a recessed deboss, while the back cover and inner sleeve feature period Durutti images by noted photographer Daniel Meadows. The bonus Hannett ‘test card’ flexidisc is now a hard vinyl 7” (with improved sound quality), while the album itself features two extra tracks, Madeleine and Lips That Would Kiss (previously issued as a separate 7-inch single on Factory Benelux in October 1980). The inner bag also features extensive liner notes with quotes from Vini Reilly, Martin Hannett, Tony Wilson, Peter Saville, Daniel Meadows, John Brierley, Bruce Mitchell and members of Joy Division, who assembled most of the sandpaper originals. The new package is sealed in a heavy duty polythene wallet, thus ensuring that adjacent records in your collection remain intact.

The Durutti Column
The Guitar and Other Machines

Massively expanded edition of the sixth album by Factory Records veteran Vini Reilly. Having been gifted electronic equipment by label boss Tony Wilson, Reilly set about devising fresh contexts for his liquid guitar playing. The Stephen Street-produced result was a genuine enrichment of the signature Durutti style that’s full of subtlety and still sounds fresh today. Includes a disc’s worth of related studio recordings and another of contemporary live material.
