Seeing Through Sound (Pentimento Volume Two)

Seeing Through Sound by US Trumpeter John Hassell is the follow-up to Listening To Pictures, released in 2018, and is the second part in his Pentimento series. More that 40 years after his first album as a band leader and coining the term Fourth World Music, he is still finding ways to mutate sound. Here we have future blues, effervescent beauty, electronic clicks and motorik beats, but not as you might know them.

Vernal Equinox

Originally released in 1977, Vernal Equinox was the first commercially available work by composer and trumpeter Jon Hassell, later a collaborator with the legendary Brian Eno. The two of them provide sleevenotes for this timely re-issue, now on vinyl for the first time in 42 years and which was named one of the best ambient records of all time by Pitchfork.

Listening To Pictures (Pentimento Volume One)

First album in nine years from Fourth World aesthetic creator Jon Hassell. On Listening To Pictures he applies the painterly technique of pentimento, where new strokes unearth older ones, to a kind of ambient jazz. Using overdubs Hassell creates dense ever shifting layers that are an absolute joy on the ears.

Dream Theory In Malaya (Fourth World Volume Two)

Here is an album that displays Jon Hassell’s early conception of Fourth World music: an attempt to step outside of rigid cultural boundaries. Dream Theory In Malaya was recorded with Brian Eno and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan on board, and uses an engaging combination of electronically-affected trumpet, field recordings, glitches and drones, and much more besides. Reissued with a bonus track, on Glitterbeat.
