Szare Vinyl, CD & tapes by Szare at Norman Records
Doof! Crash! Thwack! Bwwwwaaaaaaar! Yep, that’s the sound of a new Szare record. The mighty Mancunian producer is given the honour of minting the first release for new Bristolian imprint Polity Records, and hooooooo boy do they kick things off with a bang. ‘Miner’ is a whirring soundsystem techno delight in the Hessle Audio/Timedance vein, ‘Cut With Glass’ is a frenzied bit of instrumental grime, and ‘Drop Shadow’ is a haunting lo-fi number that hovers around the 100-bpm mark.

Doofmasters-in-chief Mumdance and Logos rope in Mancunian duo Szare for the latest drop on his Different Circles label (Strict Face, Rabit, Airhead). The results are predictably explosive. A-side ‘Kodiak’ comes across like Sleepcircle going b2b with Tessela. The track’s restlessness is its strongest asset, with the beat switching up from bar to bar, yet this experimentalism doesn’t mean that the pair sacrifice the track’s techno immediacy. Flipside ‘Translocated’ is ever-so-slightly more straight-laced but still combines IDM trickery with serious dancefloor intent.
Some dark shape construction from Szare. Lost Shapes is the full length album from the Manchester production duo. This one is jammed with production techniques, ideas and sounds from an array of dance music developments. Taking stock from ghetto house, techno, hip hop and latin rhythms this will get the floor alight in no time. Out on double 12" vinyl from Frozen Border.
