Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers
Roots & Herbs

'Roots and Herbs' is one of the best albums recorded by jazzer Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers. The celebrated drummer and his famed backing-band released many classics, but this one seems to be one of the lesser known, despite the high quality of the six Wayne Shorter compositions. The Jazz Messengers had a cracking lineup for this outing: Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Pianist Bobby Timmons and bass player Jymie Merritt (with Walter Davis Jr. also playing piano on two cuts). 'Roots and Herbs' was recorded in 1961 but was released in 1970.

Buhaina's Delight

Buhaina's Delight is Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers classic album from 1963. The album featured Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton and Jymie Merrit completing Blakey’s band - a stellar cast that has become known as the ultimate Jazz Messengers line up. The album focused on shorter songs and featured a version of Moon River.

Just Coolin'

A real treat for Jazz fans here. Just Coolin’ by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers is an unreleased album, recorded in 1959. The Jazz Messengers line-up here featured Lee Morgan on Trumpet, Bobby Timmons on Piano, Jymie Merritt on bass and Hank Mobley on Tenor Sax who took over, albeit briefly, from Bobby Golson, before Wayne Shorter joined the band.
