Don Caballero
American Don

If you’re a math-rock band who’ve come of age in the 21st Century, it’s pretty much a given that your style will bear some influence of Don Caballero. Records like American Don, the band’s fourth studio LP originally issued in 2000, threw down the gauntlet for geeky guitar bands the world over with its crunchy, witty, tempo-mangling style. Like American Football but way more fun. Many die-hards consider American Don to be Don Caballero’s best record.

Don Caballero
What Burns Never Returns

What Burns Never Returns. They’re not wrong, you know. The third LP from Don ‘Draper’ Caballero found the Pittsburgh math-rock pioneers locking down the style that would become such a huge influence on so many bands that came after them. This is due, in part, to the way that they start to bring electronics and effects pedals into play alongside their gnarled, time-signature-befuddling rock style. What Burns Never Returns is a seminal record now reissued courtesy of Touch & Go.

Don Caballero
For Respect

Reissue of Don Caballero’s 1993 debut LP here courtesy of Touch & Go. The seminal instrumental rock group have the bulk of what would become their signature style down here, but For Respect is significantly heavier than the noodle-fests that they would deliver later in the decade. There’s as much post-hardcore and noise as there is math-rock across these eleven tracks. Also, For Respect is a wicked name for an album.
